The rose bush growing in front of the prison is kind of ironic because a rose bush is something that is beautiful. It is an amazing that something so beautiful is found next to a prison, which kind of suggests that nature does not judge humans as humans do.

The author rhymes Thou with thine and thine with Prynne.The author seems to feel that Hester is an interpretation of Cain and Abel which also alludes to the Bible.The Mark of Cain was given as a curse by God to Cain, who had murdered his brother making him the first murderer. And in the Scarlet Letter, Hester has committed the adultery and has to wear a scarlet A on her clothing as if it was the mark of a curse.
