The Importance Of Zero-Waste In College Students

Improved Essays
I think it is hard as a college student to become zero-waste in our dorms, especially when it comes to food and drink packaging. I do think it is still important to focus on zero-waste when it comes to snacking and eating because it will help students be more mindful when they are buying items in the grocery store and on campus. I think focusing on buying in bulk, using reusable water bottles, and saying no to overly packaged materials is important. The chapters in the book Zero Waste Home, that talk about wardrobe and the bathroom and really helpful because I never realized how much waste I was producing with just my bathroom products. All of the cosmetics, lotions, shampoos, conditioners, toothpastes, deodorants, facewashes, body washes, etc. produced far more waste than I realized not only with packaging, but also with the chemicals they contain. I never really thought about my wardrobe in relation to zero-waste, but I think it is important for people to know how much energy and materials goes into making clothing products. Constantly buying new clothes is wasteful and most of the time unnecessary, but a lot of students ignore that. Overall, I think the zero-waste practices that we talked about in class are all important to focus on for next semester.

I think that you should definitely teach a section on this next semester

I usually keep to myself in my classes and do not raise my hand a lot. I am also not a morning person so I think it would have been beneficial for me to go to bed a little earlier or wake up a little earlier so that I was more awake during class. I think I could have also paid a little more attention to my annotated bibliography before I submitted it to avoid my mistakes. I cannot think of anything specific that you could do to better my educational experience. I really enjoyed having you as a professor and I learned a lot beyond just the course

In No Impact Man, Colin Beavan discusses many important topics, one of which is about trash. This topic got my interest because we see it everywhere, Colin goes into detail and discusses a lot of facts about it. An interesting observation was made regarding the black color of trash bags, that the reason trash bags are black instead of transparent is because people do not or cannot deal with seeing what is inside of them. Another related topic that always gets my concerns is recycling our waste. There are a lot of people that don’t recycle and just don’t care.…

In Peter Singer’s The Good Life he mentions that “the brain is a tool for reasoning, and a capacity to reason helps us to survive, to feed ourselves, and to safeguard our children.” (264) As college students make the transition from home life to living at a university, they lose the safety provided by their parents as well as certain amenities, such as home-cooked meals. In order to help these new “adults” manage this transitory period, most universities require students to live in on-campus housing and purchase meal plans.…

Writing Sample Without a doubt in my mind the best class I have taken in the past two years of my academia was my high school Spanish class. I developed a very good relationship with my instructor Sr. K, that was probably the biggest reason it was my favorite class; However, the way his class was stuctured and how he taught contributed it to being my favorite class in the last two years. We would always start the day with a class plan so everyone would know what was going to take place in class and the next. Sr. k was very detailed in lessons…

Before this course, I did not know grammar well, and what I did know I did not fully understand. Yet, due to taking the course, I learned more about the structure of the English language, and can use grammar better than I did before. For instance, the first three major assignments were filled with missing comas, verb-tense misuses, and run-on sentences. Now, I may still make mistakes, but I know why I have made them. In other English courses, I had grammar homework and reading assignments that, often, seemed to be busy work, but with this course, I did not think that was the case.…

Over the course of the semester, I have learned all of the skills necessary to excel in school and college. Some of the most important things I have learned were how to manage time and how to be an active reader. Before learning how to manage my time, I would easily get distracted and procrastinate but now I have learned how to get everything done in a timely manner. Also, before the course I would struggle to comprehend what my textbook said but thanks to the course, I now spend the time to reevaluate what I am reading to fully understand the material. Other helpful lessons I have learned from this class were how to take good, helpful notes and what kind of learner I am.…

Roughly about 50 percent of all produce in the United States is thrown away, and there is an estimated 70 billion pounds of food waste in America each year. Americans sure do waste a tremendous amount of food. Wasted food is also the single biggest occupant in American landfills. Globally, about 800 million people suffer starvation, but only ten years ago the total was almost 1 billion. A drop of nearly 200 million in the number of chronically hungry people should encourage anyone committed to ending global hunger.…

    1. For me, the three most important things I learned in this class was to pay more attention to the behaviors obtained and expressed by children, I learned more information on the various ways that a teacher can adapt and accommodate the special needs their students might need in order to be successful in their learning outcomes, and finally I learned how important it is for teachers to take the extra time to learn about the different cultures their students come from, whether it be by participating in cultural events, reading some books, or finding additional ways to immerse themselves in it. 2. To implement the above practices into my classroom, I will be sure to interact constantly with my students and their families, always trying to learn…
