Reflective Essay: National Literature And Composition

Superior Essays
Throughout my senior year in high school, I was in AP Literature and Composition. It was a difficult class, to say the least. I wrote papers almost every week, as the goal of the class, as I was told, was to prepare us for the AP National Literature and Composition exam. Because of this, I became much more proficient at writing a decent essay in a short amount of time. This easily applied to some rather important things, especially concerning my chances of getting good scholarships, and being able to survive in college. However, throughout high school, research papers were not a common assignment, and while I think this shows in the research paper I did for Writing 102, I think my skills at writing a really fast, but decent paper show here. …show more content…
This most likely became a habit from AP Literature and Composition, as the majority of our papers where in-class essays, and as such, had to be written within a span of forty minutes. Because of this, I began continued to write nearly all of my papers the night before, and almost always getting most of my work done after ten o’ clock, as much as this annoys my roommate. However, some of my greatest works were done at this time, such as the paper I wrote to apply to college. I wrote it all in one sitting, and it became a paper I am very proud of. In continuation, this line of thinking applies to my Writing 102 paper, cleverly titled “The Truth of Living a Lie”, because I did the same thing. However, this paper did not turn out quite as well. Although I spent much more time on it, this is likely due to the research I had to put in, as well as the word limit. There are some times where I will admit I should have done more work ahead of time, and this would have been one of those

During this summer session of ENGL101A, I have learned multiple ways to express myself through my writing. In fact, before signing up for this class, I did not know the proper way to compose an academic essay for a particular audience, and how to properly cite my sources. Nevertheless, after the short summer session, I am able to define my purpose and audience, analyze critically any piece of information, and write with proper citations and fewer grammatical errors with confidence. Through the short time of 5 weeks, I learned how to focus on my audience as well as how to define the purpose of my papers as academically as possible.…

For the narrative, I had no problem writing, since everything was my own words. However, for the third essay, the research paper, it took time to find anything relevant to my argument, and moreover, it took time to actually like my topic, since it wasn’t what I wanted to do. The research took a large portion of my time, but the actual writing wasn’t too complicated. Although the increase in minimum word count became overwhelming at times, the work time in class allowed me to manage my time well, not needing to work a lot outside of school. I never procrastinated, and didn’t have to rush the night before it was due.…

After finishing the English 101 course I feel like I have accomplished many of the goals that I was challenged with the beginning of the course, such as critically thinking and reading with text from the textbook “Dialogues” by Gary Goshgarian, substantively replying to my peers to understand their point of views from the text and to get a better understanding of a rhetorical argument. Thinking and reading critically were very important this whole course. Thinking and reading critically were something you would have to do in every assignment that was given. Incorporating it in every assignment has helped us greatly improve week by week and betters our understanding of each topic and the assignments main idea.…

Throughout the semester of English Composition I, I learned any new things. Over the past few months I have learned many new tips on how to create a good paper. Although I gained much knowledge over the past few months I did struggle with a few things such as formulating a written thesis statement expressing my main point in the composition, producing rough drafts preliminary to the final draft, applying transition strategies to organize the entire composition cohesively and coherently, and overall practicing various prewriting strategies, such as thinking, brainstorming, listing, and freewriting.…

No matter where you go or went to school, you always have some type of English class that forces you to write papers. These papers usually has to be a certain way or over a certain topic. To me that was a pretty big problem for me because I could do free writing easy, but when you tell me to write about something that I don 't have any interest in and I have to follow your “rules”, then I will just try to blow it off. I have always hated the way Professors and the world had this “image” of their version of a “perfect” essay. I always messed up on the rules like where to put my commas or semicolons, that to me is the hardest part to not have a run- on sentence.…

The many skills that I have acquired include in-depth research, more through drafts, fluidity of my paper, and better outlines. These skills will help me writing in the future because I need good in-depth research, fluidity, and more through drafts to have a good starting point and will give me a better idea on what I need to add. The most effective thing we did in class was peer reviewing others essays because I got to see different writing styles and different ideas on how to incorporate my evidence better or different choice of words. Even though I have developed good skills for the future, I still have struggles in my writing. This class has helped me to recognize what I struggle with in writing so in the future I can recognize it and improve on my weaknesses.…

Everyone hates English class is what I thought before taking English 102. However, that may have been the case before I entered Dr. Byrd’s domain, but after finishing the class I have come to the realization that English class can be greatly resourceful. English 102 this year has had its ups and downs, and I must admit the ups outweigh the downs. Meaning, this year, I have learned that I am not a student who wants to read or write, but through reading and writing my mind and skill sets concerning English have grown. During English 102 this year, reading and writing in class helped me expand my writing skills, improved my will to comprehend, and most importantly helped expand my knowledge.…

When it comes to Composition 1, I learned a lot. In the beginning I wanted to learn how to become a better and creative writer. I also wanted to learn how to come up with topics and write about them easier. One last very important thing that I wanted to learn was how to prepare myself for college next year. After finishing Composition 1, I can say that I did accomplish all of those goals.…

When I began studying at the University of Montevallo, I had a background of high school creative writing and English classes, and one summer of a college English class. To be honest, I was terrified of jumping into my fall English 102 class. I felt I was unprepared for a serious college level composition class, and that I would have a strenuous time adjusting to a four-year university. However, as I walk away from my English 102 class I carry the understanding of writing a college level essay, undertaking research and completing a research and argument paper properly, and knowledge to prepare me for my other classes and profession.…

English Composition I taught me a lot about myself, including how to be a better college student, through the process of writing. At the beginning of the year, I was not very excited about having to write argumentative papers. This is because I did not care enough about the assigned topics to have an opinion. But, I did learn a lot that I would not have known otherwise from having to research information about the topics I chose to write about. For example, in paper #2, I wrote about the niqab and how I believe that it is oppressive to women.…

We wrote a lot of papers after reading a novel about what we thought about either the book or how the character responded. We also did a lot of research papers on current events each year I took English. I also did a research paper every year for four years of high school. Most of the papers I wrote were usually 1000 words or more. The research papers were usually either 5-8 pages long and had to be a 1000 words or more and just having a picture on a page didn’t count.…
