Personal Narrative-The Integral Part Of My Writing

Improved Essays
As a young boy growing up an only child I had a very active and vivid imagination. It served to be my greatest attribute when it came to writing. I could recall stories I played out in my head and brought them to life on paper. Sadly that still left me with mediocre and at times some very low scores. It was extremely discouraging to put so much into a paper and receive a grade less than satisfactory for the work I knew was A+ material. What were my problems and what was I not doing to result in such low remarks? I took it upon myself to seek help in the form of literature from writers like Stephen King, Edgar Allen Poe, Maya Angelou, Aristotle and some other incredible individuals in the writing game. What I first noticed was the …show more content…
I recall a time I was in my junior year of high school. I had a English teacher who everyone knew as "Mrs. Throw some D 's on yo grade" because she would never give anyone anything higher then that on the essays we 'd have to write in her class. The topic was simple. I had to write about how I was affected when 911 happened. I 'm not sure exactly what I wrote. I do know I pretty much described how frustrating it was to have had our game that day cancelled and so forth and so on. When I received my paper back she had written in big red letters "paper lacks structure" and she had docked me 30 points because of it. "What 's structure?" I asked myself. My teacher handed me a book titled "Green eggs and ham" by Dr. Seuss. My eye brows raised in confusion. How does this book relate to structure. As I read I noticed the structure of the reading. Structure and organization were also key elements that would improve my writing. My teacher explained to me had I mapped out what is I was saying and organized it better my grade would improve. Not to mention the improvement of my writing skills as …show more content…
When I write I can always hear myself speaking the words on to the page. My thoughts translated on to paper and shared with others. The addition of a healthy appetite for reading definitely improved areas where I was weak before. A good paper/book/whatever has to be clear. It also needs to convey a message that the audience can decode easily. Everyone has their own style to writing. It is what tells your story apart from another 's. I learned from reading other well known authors that not only was I capable of writing great papers but having a solid knowledge of different literary masters would prove highly beneficial to my success in the future. In any field before you become great you must first study the greats. Learn from those who came before you. I believe that I can become the best writer there is simply because I have not strayed away from individuality. I strongly believe that is what stamps you into the minds of your readers. Unfortunately the reason It baffles me as to how something so free and opinionated such as writing can be graded on such a narrow perspective. Individual creativity in writing should be celebrated and not docked because it doesn 't fit into a mold. Hence the reason why I have been confused and still am to this day. I hope to finally be freed by this

The day we expected to get our assignments back, I felt calm and confident. When I received my paper and saw what my grade was and the comments my teachers made, my whole mood changed. The grade and the remarks were nothing of what I expected, and the grade was well below what I normally score. After this assignment I started to give up because I did not think I would ever do as good and that my writing, in fact, did not improve at all, but Mrs. Moore told me not give up and to keep trying. The talk we had made me realize that I need to learn from this experience and continue to work hard and do my absolute best.…

I never considered myself to be an excellent writer but still thought I wrote well enough to get my point across without confusing the reader too much. However, any confidence that I had in my writing skills was lost for a short time when I had to write my first timed essay in school. Luckily, the timed essay assignment also helped me see that I needed to work on my writing and, as a result, actually turned out to be a more positive experience rather than a negative one. It was just another regular school day that was near its end, and I had one more class to go to before everyone was released to go home.…

Adequate writing was always a struggle for me because I struggled with coming up with topics to write about. Even when teachers gave us prompts to write about I struggled writing about them mostly because I thought writing was boring. Another reason I was discouraged by writing was I would spend hours at a time trying to come up with ideas for a prompt and would barely come up with any ideas to write about. Being a civil engineering major I see why writing is so important in my career field. My experience with writing has had its good moments and its bad moments.…

My talent is creating, and my form of creating is writing. Writing is a thing I've been doing since I was in the seventh grade. I started writing then because of a troublesome past, both my mother and my father had left my two other siblings and I all alone, leaving us with our uncle. It was very hard for me to adjust, I was fatigued and emotionally hurt, I turned to writing. My love for writing grew into a bigger part of my life when I kept dream journals.…

I didn’t know what I was in for after that day. A writer’s key experiences is what makes them different from other writers and is crucial to their growth as a writer. The writing I composed in Mrs. Heningburg’s class was central to my development as a writer because it made me more confident in my writing and made me more aware of others reading my work as a writer. After hearing my last writing assignment's result in the class, I started expecting a high scoring on my writing works. The compliment about my essay from my sixth-grade teacher changed me, so let's start from the beginning.…

Whether we know it or not in this modern society we are writers everyday of our lives. These interactions shape not only how we communicate but how we write as well. Personally, I have been shaped by the influence of both other writers I have known and those I have only read the creations of. Those same influences contributed to both my writing style in the classroom and to my identity as a writer. I spent a lot of my childhood with my nose deep in fiction novels at near by libraries.…

My writing isn’t nearly as advanced as I would like it to be, and this is mostly because I don’t write on my free time. I only ever sit down to write when I need to for an assignment or if it is something for work, however, I do occasionally make journal entries, but it is very rare. Even though I don’t write very often, when I do, it isn’t that hard. I ranked myself a six on challenged to gifted writer because I don’t find writing a challenge, but I am not that great at it either. On the other scales I put myself down as a five.…

My Path to Literacy For a very long time writing and reading was a huge struggle for me. I was one of those students who was very intelligent, but disliked reading tremendously and was often told, “You write the way you talk”. The older I grew the more I realized that my struggles with writing was due to my lack of reading. I was aware of my issues but because it became a part of my writing habits it was hard to adapt to anything different. I wanted to be like everyone else and be a good authentic and productive writer but it seemed almost impossible.…

In the fifth grade, I wrote a thirty-page mystery style book. My teachers all praised my writing capabilities, and my classmates would come to me for guidance with writing their essays. I cherished reading, and, as a punishment, my momma and teachers would take away my books to force me to pay attention. I kept this infatuation of writing and reading all through middle school, but it began to whittle down in high school. In all of the essays I had ever written, I never once received a grade lower than a B on them.…
