The Importance Of Writing As A Behavior Therapist

Decent Essays
When I first think of writing, I think of college. I think of the many papers that I spent all night awake, sometimes for days trying to write. Even though I have not been in school in over six years, I still write every day for my job. As a Behavior Therapist, we have many daily tasks that include writing of some kind. I have to write daily session notes that must be extremely detailed, precise, and clear of any grammatical errors. I also have to complete quarterly progress reports for each student during the academic year, as well as the extended school year. If any student or I have to cancel a session, I am required to fill out an incident report promptly. This too, must be detailed and accurate. Along with these documents, I also have

Assignment after assignment would pile up in my homework folder till the night before they were due. As the teacher would hand out the sheet, I wouldn’t even look at it I’d just put it right into my folder, hoping it was a joke that I didn’t actually have to write. Writing has always been a struggle to me. Creating ideas, brainstorming has never come easy. I could never connect with my writing, forced to put words on the paper about a topic I had no interest in.…

My first though on this assignment was “ Who writes anymore? With all of the technology we have no one writes anymore,” I was wrong. I frequently find myself writing at work, at Intermountain Medical Center as a Patient Care Tech and as a Health Unit Coordinator. Often I am writing for myself, writing to my coworkers, other departments in the hospital and writing for as well as to my boss. Recently I noticed the longer I have been working at this job the more comfortable I am writing to my colleagues and my boss.…

My writing experience in and out of school has almost always been seen exactly the same. It’s work, you do it for the grade and for some you suffer the entire time. On the occasional paper, usually one with no restrictions and you choose your subject, I find myself in a love and hate relationship with it. The fact being that writing papers has almost always been seen as homework for me. Have your paper done by this day, it needs to be this many words, and no grammatical errors just isn’t something I’d find myself getting hyped for every saturday night.…

The most crucial step of my writing processes is letting my mind go wild and my fingers move freely. Whenever I write anything, I always let myself write whatever is on my mind at that exact second. Even if it doesn’t make 100% sense or isn’t exactly on topic, I’ll type it out. When I was writing my essay, I didn’t stop to fix anything until the very end. When I finished writing, I looked for mistakes.…

I have always considered my relationship with writing to be very insignificant. Although I enjoy spending time verbally expressing my thoughts and feelings to others, it becomes difficult when these thoughts and feelings are expressed through writing. Throughout my adolescent years, I would often receive feedback for my writing given by the teacher in the form of a grade. Being unable to effectively organize my thoughts and ideas into words and sentences, I would feel reluctant to continue writing confidently whenever I received an undesirable grade.…
