In general, employees who take part in an employer sponsored wellness program are better able to manage chronic health conditions, learn more about their disease process, and may find a support system that they had previously been unaware of (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2013). Workplace wellness programs encourage employees to take an active role in their own health and well being by providing education, health-screening opportunities, and in some instances, places for the employee to exercise or take fitness classes at either no cost or a reduced cost. Employees may interpret the benefit of a workplace wellness program as a sign that their employer is truly invested in their health and, in return, may experience an increased sense of pride in their job and employer (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2013).
