Ambiguity In Communication

Introduction In the absence of workplace communication, one cannot give instructions, cannot order the equipment or supply, cannot measure the progress, products or services cannot be delivered, etc. In short nothing can be accomplished. Management is a combination of five functions, planning, organizing, staffing, leading, and controlling. All these five functions are dependent on communication (Conrad, 2014). Thus, communication is a key for successful work environment. As the diversity increases the need for effective communication increases. Leaders are responsible to maintain the flow of the communication. The flow might be upward, downward and across the organization. It results in bigger loss or damage over a period of time rather than instant effects. Because of this attribute such loss is difficult to measure and quantify. According to Minnesota Management & Budget [MMB] (2013), there are several potential aftermaths of poor communication. First, it might breakdown the internal control. If employees experience role ambiguity in the organization 's internal control, there is a possibility that employees ignore the responsibilities without considering the consequences. Ultimately such breakdown, misunderstandings, confusions affects the overall control structure of the organization. To avoid such consequences, managers must engage all the stakeholders in reinforcing the importance of control structure to achieve the strategic objectives. Second effect is the lack of accountability. Management can initiate the accountability by establishing the example. A flawless communication influences the employee perception about role expectations and personal responsibilities. Effective and efficient communication about the role expectations , performance feedback motivates the employee. Third effect is the increased level of stress. In organizations grapevine is very common. Such grapevine affects the unclear directions, expectations, fear, and stress. There is a direct relationship between the level of stress and the level of productivity. For every organization each and every employee is an asset. Poor communication creates the communication gap between the employees and the top management. Effective communication must flow upward, downward, and across the organization.
