The Importance Of Working On A Farm

Improved Essays
Task 1.b) (Picture on page 275) I have been working on this farm for five summers now. It is hot here, even though we are in the southern part of Africa, as long from the Equator in this direction. It is often around 35 degrees Celsius here, and no part of the fields has any shadows. We have minimal with drinks and food here, so sometimes people eat the tomatoes. The reason I work here is because my mother is sick. She does not get the medical support she needs, simply because we can’t pay for it. I would rather like t not to be this way, but since my father died in a work accident seven years ago, it has been gradually getting worse. I have three brothers, and one sister. All of them are younger than me, but my brothers and I work all year …show more content…
If I don’t work hard enough or fast enough, they take money away from the check. Somedays, I’m not even get paid, even though I work all day, as good as I can. We are sleeping in the barn by the farm house, in some hay. We have a room on about 10 square meters, so it’s very tight between us. I don’t like it, but I have to get some money for my mother, and since I only see her in the weekends, it kind of hard to know if she is safe and well during the week. I hope my sister gets accepted to school next year, but then I have to work even harder to pay for it. We will see. Two of my brother’s work on a farm a couple of kilometers away, so sometimes the bring me a piece of bread in the evening, because they get better treated then I do. Which is good for them, and for me I guess, because they make more money than me, so that we can afford more food when the weekend comes. My last brother works in the city. I don’t really know what he is doing, but he won’t tell me either. He often comes home with marks all over his …show more content…
The last weeks we have had a lot of accidents on a part of the site we are currently working on, and I’m walking around ones in a while, to ask the workers what they think is wrong with the site, and what we in the leading group should do to improve their safety and keep them happy. Last week, I made every worker on the part of the site that we have had all of the accidents on write something they are unhappy with on a piece of paper, and made them hang them on the outer wall of the building, so I could go over it with my supervisor and find out if there actually was anything we could improve. One guy wrote that his co-workers always end up coming late for work, both when they start up in the morning, and when they go out to get lunch. He can’t do all of the jobs on his own, sometimes he can, but he still gets frustrated with the situation, since it happens so often. This means that he takes his mind off the work he is supposed to be doing, and loses concentration. On a site as big as this, it is difficult to follow up on everything that is wrong, but this is something to grab a hold on, and get rid of as soon as possible, because they aren’t allowed to sneak away from work like that, and it is bad to make such a bad work environment. I’m going to talk to the guys that this is about, and if they don’t show up when they are going to, I will have to fire them. We can’t pay people

They are unable to see their loved ones. But, hopefully most situations won’t end the way hers did. Maria Fernandes is one example of these low-wage workers striving to survive. In an article titled For a Worker With Little Time Between 3 Jobs, a Nap Has Fatal Consequences published by the New York Times, Maria Fernandes worked three jobs, at three Dunkin’ Donuts locations in northern New Jersey. She’d shuttle from Newark to Linden to Harrison and back.…

Introduction and Overview For several years, the FFA has been thought of by many as the “Future Farmers of America.” While farming may have been the fundamentals of this organization, it has evolved into so much more. Therefore, the idea that FFA is merely a farming organization can be exceedingly misleading to those who have little experience or knowledge of this organization. Contrary to popular belief, FFA’s sole purpose is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their leadership skills, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education. The National FFA consists of 649,355 members, from 7,859 chapters in all 50 states.…

Is agriculture really a harm to society? The controversial Jared Diamond seems to believe so. Is this ‘enthusiastic’ man correct in his lack of faith in the culture of farming, or has agriculture helped the progression of humanity? Is the sickness and suffering of our modern world caused by the creation of a stable food source? Diamond’s extreme opposition towards the progressivist point of view is evident in his writing because he portrays the supporters as an indulgent party, unwilling to work hard for their food, though his overall sarcastic tone and overbearing language makes it hard to take him seriously.…

Along my journey in school I remember all the sacrifices my parents did for me and my siblings. For example, my father Adolfo Garcia would work from Monday to Saturday from sun up to sun down in order to provide food on the table, clothing on our backs, and a roof over are heads. Although both of my parents encourage and motivate me to attend school and pursue higher education, I am also motivated by all the sacrifices they have made because I know that if it wasn’t for the support of my parents I would not be where I am…

Just like any other person born and raised in Latin America, the biggest challenge I ever had was when I first came to the United States. Although the circumstances in which I came were different than many other people, it was definitely an experience I wouldn’t want anyone to live. Today, thousands of families decide to come to the United States in the search for a better quality of life. Unfortunately the American dream does not arrive from one day to another. In fact it requires a lot of sacrifice, a lot of hard work, and a lot of tears.…

I would first like to thank Frostburg State University for accepting me in their institution and giving me the chance to further my education after my high school scholar years. I have enjoyed my time at Frostburg State University and with hard work I have been able to make the dean’s list and be accepted in the Honors program during the first semester of my freshman year. I hope to continue to work even harder during the second semester and throughout my school career. As a small university, Frostburg has enabled me to benefit from many things, such as the small size classes. Now that I have gotten used to college and life on campus, I believe it is time to continue to push myself to work harder and to attend an institution where I could be academically challenged and can be surrounded by many people who share my profession.…

"Veal calves, taken away from their mothers shortly after birth, live their entire lives in near darkness, chained by their necks and unable to move in any direction. They commonly suffer from anemia, diarrhea, pneumonia and lameness" (Motavalli N.p.). Veal, chickens, pigs, cows, and all other livestock animals are exposed to horrifying conditions when facing the end of their lives. All of these unethical experiences are due to factory farming. Factory farms are massive, dark, mechanized versions of the old-fashioned, outdoor, American farm that most think of.…

Factory farming is heavily prevalent in todays society. Most nearly all of the meat and by products of animals come from animals raised in factories, robbing them of living and fulfilling a full life. I one hundred percent agree with Blake Hurst that “only ‘industrial farming’ of meat can possibly see the demand for an increasing population and increased demand for food as a result of growing incomes”. The world today is growing at a way too rapid pace for natural production of animals. The days of animals happily roaming around Grandma’s farm are over.…

In contrast, Hurst believes that industrial farmers are environmentally responsible, changing industrial farming will inflate food prices and potential starvation, and realizes that we can’t change nature; we must use what we have. Hurst points out that “The biggest environmental harm I have done as a farmer is the topsoil (and nutrients) I used to send down the Missouri River to the Gulf of Mexico before we began to practice no-till farming, made possible only by the use of herbicides. The combination of herbicides and genetically modified seed has made my farm more sustainable, not less, and actually reduces the pollution I send down the river.” (Hurst)…
