Answer: I have worked in public relations for eight years now. I was a former journalist in Providence, Rhode Island. I decided to settle down and have a family. Working as a news reporter wasn’t ideal because of the weird hours. I would be up at 4:00 a.m. standing in the snow to report a story. When I moved to Massachusetts, I struggled to find my niche. I was struggling to find something in Public Relations. I ended up working for a small marketing firm in Massachusetts doing public relations. Some mornings I wake up at 5:00 a.m. and I don’t go back to bed until 11:00 or 12:00 p.m. Some days I will be pitching a story to the media for an interview with my client. Other days are spent prepping for a media interview. I’m constantly monitoring the news. Some days I’m emailing journalists for possible stories. Other days I’m working with clients on new updates. Some days I’m in meetings with my clients for hours at a time. My job consists of a little bit of everything. Being in public relations means that every day is different. An employer looks for something interesting that sets them apart. I want to see that you were a part of your college newspaper. Instead of going out on a Friday night, I want to see that you wrote a blog about something that matters to you. Employers would like to see a well rounded individual that has a passion for this industy. We are looking for the go-getters.
Question: In your experience, how has social media influenced the public relations industry?
Answer: Social media and public relations go hand and hand. Social media can make or break a company. One bad review could make an entire company go under. People are on social media now more than ever. Social media has a heavy influence on a company’s performance. So many people are quick to judge or make a decision based off what they see on social media. For example, I was reading that Ben and Jerrys was not supporting police officers. When a well known organization takes a stance on something so controversial, customers decide to not support them. That creates a negative public perception.
