In the United States becoming sixteen years old is a big milestone because that is the age teenagers are allowed to get their license and they are able to start working. Both of these things can give teenagers more independence because they bring teenagers one step closer to becoming an adult. Having a job while being in high school is very common among students. It’s just as common as participating in school sports, hanging out with peers, going to sporting events, or just staying home and spending time with family. The amount and variation of work available to teenagers might be limited, however teenagers are still able to find employment. A few examples of possible available jobs for teenagers are landscaping or lawn mowing, retail, a grocery store, or at a restaurant. Working while attending school may be stressful, but if students can find a way to balance the two then they can benefit from it. The responsibility of having a job gives students another task that needs to be done and makes students learn how to successfully manage their time. Another outcome is students are finally able to gain work experience when they become employed. A final result is having the opportunity to handle one’s own finances. Some of these might seem overwhelming to teenagers, but if they learn how to balance their school work, work schedule, and other responsibilities then the results are worth it. The skills that teenagers obtain from working while in high school are going to be helpful for when they grow up; even more so if they learn them when they are younger because they will have more time to perfect
