Many felt as if it challenged their processing skills greatly. Processing skills are defined as “Occupational performance skills [e.g., ADL process skills, school process skills] observed as a person (1) selects, interacts with, and uses task tools and materials; (2) carries out individual actions and steps; and (3) modifies performance when problems are encountered” (AOTA, 2014, S45). During the activity, several people commented that there were many different motor and social skills that were involved in each activity. For example, in the activity of carrying the pizza boxes, motor skills were maximally used, in order to walk while balancing the boxes. On the other hand, the tip counting activity required a significant amount of social and cognitive processes. The students needed to communicate and uses cognitive functions, in order to equally separate all of the tips. While many of our peers enjoyed the fact that all of their processing skills were challenged, some others thought that it was a lot of effort that needed to be put into the activities. While walking around I heard some students explain to others that the activities were too long, and causing them to become tired. The purpose of having them repeat every activity was so that they mastered each one. It was apparent that all of the students enjoyed eating the product at the end of their work day. Being that so many people in the American population hold jobs, it is most likely that work is an area of occupation that is very significant to many. Learning more about work and productivity will allow for me to come up with better interventions, to help the client regain their function in order to return to work. Completing the activities in a pizza shop setting is only one of the various different ways that a person can work. By choosing this setting, we were able to expose our peers to many different contexts the someone in the workforce may be involved in. When practicing Occupational Therapy, one client may be involved in a job where cognitive skills are maximally challenged, while another client may work at a job where motor skills are maximally challenged. It was beneficial that this teaching lab covered several areas of work because, when we are out working as licensed occupational therapists, we will see various clients who can and cannot preform many different
