Cole’s album isn’t revolutionary - it’s repetitive.
The next couple of songs in J. Cole’s album such as “Change”, “Neighbors”, and “Ville Mentality” all follow the same pattern as “For Whom the Bell Tolls.” Loud! Obnoxious! Vulgar! Yet, underneath all that hogwash there seems to be a poem. Newsflash to all you hip hop lovers rap is just a poem. You know those pieces of literature that most of us dreaded reading in school? Well that is what you’re listening to, except instead of reading it in your head someone like J. Cole is screaming it in your ear. Why? Why is there such a large amount of people who love rap but only a small amount of people who read poems when they’re not forced to?
I guess that means that we must appreciate rap. Rap can be a form of poetry and storytelling for most of the younger generation who refuses to read a good poem. If we get rid of the stereotypes that goes along with rap and hip hop music then we might all be able appreciate the story behind the beat. Maybe it’s time to stop open our eyes and stop judging a song just because it is classified as rap or hip hop. Not everyone has to be a fan of rap or hip hop; but, taking the time to really listen to the meaning of a song before judging it can go a long
