Although Wind-Wolf is educated in areas concerning his heritage, the skills he needs to be on the same level as his classmates are not there. I understand that your son has a different heritage that the rest of us, and there should be some diversity, but he should still be able to grasp the concepts that kids his age know. You explained that your child is “not culturally ‘disadvantaged,’ but he is culturally ‘different’” (Lake 97). Wind-Wolf is very different from his peers in ways that are good and bad. When we were in class the other day he told me that there were 13 months in a year when the rest of the class simultaneously stated 12 when the question was posed about the months in a year (Lake 97). Even though it is part of his heritage, he needs to be able to switch from Indian heritage learning to our high level American school environment. While discussing different things in class, I caught Wind-Wolf gazing out the window seeming as if he wasn’t paying attention to me, but when I pulled him aside after class, he said that he was taught to to watch and study the changes in nature (Lake 97). I conferenced with him about having to learn when to practice his heritage ways and when to act like the ideal student. Recently I asked him to share with the class about rituals and ceremonies that are conducted on the reserve and he shared with the class about all of the dances, ceremonies, and rituals he has experienced throughout his life (Lake 96). Along with his peers, I found it very interesting to hear about the different things that the Indian culture does. Understanding that “Indians play a significant part in the history of Western society” (Lake 99), I took action to have a class or two dedicated to Indian history and heritage. In retrospect of the first day of school, I did attempt to call Wind-Wolf just Wind not knowing his background knowledge and really getting to know your son. I have witnessed his getting bullied for racism and I have stepped in and took action, but the children are very stubborn toward your sons heritage because they are young and do not understand the importance of diversity in a
