What started all of this is the state wanting to cut the budget of the city at any cost. The first bad decision they made was changing the city’s water supply from Lake Huron to The River Flint. Flint was in a state of financial emergency at the time, and they did this in order to save funds. Lake Huron’s water is much more pure than the Flint river’s, because the Flint River is contaminated by industrial waste, making the quality of water much worse.…

The Chattahoochee River, Georgia’s most heavily-used water source, is home to a variety of fish and a supplier of over 70% of the drinking water in metro Atlanta; it was also ranked number three on America’s ‘most endangered’ list. Each day, more than 250 million gallons of sewage waste water is dumped in to river, so news that the river is constantly contaminated with E. coli is no surprise. Even with the vast amount of contamination, Georgia allows the dumping of waste to continue; they give out permits to dump in the waters. Without proper laws and regulations, the continued dumping of waste on the Chattahoochee River will eventually cause it to become too contaminated for human use and wildlife survival. The Chattahoochee River begins in the northeast of Georgia and continues down 524 miles to Apalachicola Bay, Florida.…

The Great Lakes hold 21% of our natural freshwater supply. I am a limnologist living in Detroit, Michigan. My city is located near Lake Erie and I visit it weekly with my research team to record the changes in the lakes. I've written two books: one about Lake Erie and the other about Lake Huron. Many believe that The Great Lakes are dying; as an expert and an experienced scientist, I can confirm that this is true mostly because of pollution, habitat loss, and non-native species entering the lakes.…

New York City’s surrounding waterways are some of the city’s greatest and most valuable assets in the areas of tourism, trade, and water supply. For the past decade, the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has invested over $10 billion in upgrading and maintaining the quality of NYC’s waterways. Thus far, over 90% of water sources have come to meet federal standards, while the rest of the outstanding waterways remain as one of the biggest problems that the city and the DEP face. NYC functions off a combined sewage system (CSO)- a system that treats both stormwater runoff and sanitary waste. However, it is common for these existing CSOs to overflow during heavy rain or snowstorms because they are unable to handle the excess flow, which…

Three out of four Ontario citizens receive their water from the Great Lakes. If raw untreated sewage is continuously dumped into the lake, major problems will arise. Water borne illnesses will become more prevalent, citizens will be unable to use the lake for everyday activities and the highly polluted water will drive the price of water treatment above average, leading to increased water bills. This will not only affect the people living around the lake but the animals living in and around the lake will suffer as well. Fish and other aquatic animal populations have already begun to decrease due to high levels of chemical concentrations and sewage, which are contaminating food sources.…

A common discrepancy that is brought up when discussing water pollution is whether the cost will become too large to even begin creating change, that the amount of resources required to implement could be used elsewhere for a more immediate impact. The discussion of environmental problems is a topic of many political debates, but throughout the years scientific evidence has documented the…
