My Volunteering Journey

Improved Essays
This weekend, I had the privilege of volunteering at the Gallagher Charitable that is hosted by the baseball and softball team each year. I have had the chance to volunteer every year, however this year was much different. In years past, aside from standing around and making sure families knew where to go, I did not do very much. This year, however, I served as the Spanish translator for the event. I felt that having this job made me truly see that I had done a lot in years past. Having taken Core 9 this semester, I found that there are a lot of connections I can make between this volunteer opportunity and this Christian Humanism Core. The main themes I found during my time volunteering on Saturday were giving back to the community and being …show more content…
As Christians, we must try our best to make time to serve others and be more involved in the community. Father McFarland lecture talked about setting aside time in our personal lives to give back. He said, “give up a couple of hours of your life to bring joy to those around you” (McFarland 10/31/16). Although I and all one-hundred plus volunteers, could have been sleeping in and enjoying our Saturday, we chose to give up those four hours of our day to bring joy to the children and families of the community. Seeing all of the smiling parents and children enjoying their time with us truly made me very happy. I felt that at the moment we really were making a difference in these people’s lives. I felt even more moved by knowing that many of my students and their families had attended to event. I did not expect to see so many of my kids here because I had not even considered the fact the they come from low-income (in need) families. Seeing so many of them at this event made it all the more worth it. Father McFarland mentioned that “serving others is equally rewarding” (McFarland 10/31/16). With this I couldn’t agree more. I find it rewarding helping others not only by giving them something during this holiday season, but also by being able to translate for them what is going on. Being able to communicate with Non-English speakers is rewarding because I am helping make this experience slightly easier for them to

How I got to view the world through the eyes of others through my volunteer experiences. When you get to do that and learn something new but other ways to help you are truly outstanding. There are so many things that first attracted me to volunteering. Of course, it was advertised in a way to volunteer for yourself to gain experience however I was attracted by how a little can mean the world to someone else. Since a young age, I have been surrounded by many cultures; however, I was greatly impacted by the Latino community. My family and I moved throughout the valley and I would observe that many adults would work long hours as farm workers. Similarly to my family many families lived in poverty. My observations and the sacrifices my family made inspired me to work hard in school to accomplish my goal of going to college. I am grateful for all the help my family…

For our civic engagement project for the Redefining Leadership class, my group, Stephanie, Hailee, Christina, and I, decided to volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House in New Haven, Connecticut on a Thursday. Before we got there, we did not know what to expect, but afterwards, we truly felt grateful that we helped out a great cause. The Ronald McDonald House is a charity house that keeps families close to their family members that are being treated at a nearby hospital. We spoke with someone who works at the House and she told us that eight families were there on that day. We were able to see some people and did what we could to help out.…

In my initial phase of volunteering at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, I spent 24 hours learning to professionally transport and communicate with patients. Following training, I commenced my role as a hands-on-care volunteer at DFCI. I currently provide cancer patients with hand massage as they undergo their infusion. IVs are often placed in various regions of the hand so I learn to adapt to differing circumstances to maximize the care and relaxation each patient receives.…

Through my high school and college careers, I made community service a top priority. I completed many hours through my high school and extracurricular activities such as three years of participating in Wisconsin Day of Service, four years caroling at nursing homes for Project Merry Christmas, and four years helping plan and work the Spencer FFA Easter Egg Hunt. In college, I worked as a server for the annual benefit dinners, volunteered as an escort for guests during the week long convention held on campus, and headed up and created the first ever Freed-Hardeman University Change War with the proceeds going to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.…

Service is something that is near and dear to my heart, and this trip was no exception. My FYS group and I went to a local non for profit Atlas (Attaining Truth, Love, And Self-control) to do projects they needed done. This organization works with troubled people who need a mentor or a shoulder to lean on. Because they are a non for profit and are very busy, the people on pay roll didn’t have the time to do yard work or extra jobs around the building.…

“Teenagers volunteering rate has increased significantly over the last 30 years, teenagers continue to be primarily interested in episodic volunteering (contributing 99 or fewer hours a year). Today, 67.9 percent of teenagers are episodic volunteers.” The school is adapting a new policy that will require all students to complete 100 hours of community service as a graduation requirement. They are going to ask the students for their input on this policy and see what they will decide. It is absolutely fine that students will be asked to do community service in order to graduate from high…

Volunteering at the homeless shelter is one of my favorite things to do. A few weeks ago, on a serene Saturday morning, my family and I volunteered at Loaves and Fishes. It was special to see just the sheer amount of people who had come out to volunteer on that Saturday. If you think about, they could’ve been doing anything on that Saturday morning. Yet, they decided to help give back to their community.…

Professor Janine Ledoux, my instructor for a class on Health and Nutrition, invited me to join her in serving food at the Blessing Center - a non-profit charitable aid organization located in Redlands, CA. My experience at the Blessing Center, serving food to the homeless members of my community introduced me to a world I was naively unaware of and shed light on the positive difference compassionate people can make. My time at the Blessing Center allowed me to delve deeper into how issues such as homelessness, joblessness, and hunger affected my community. One man was particularly eager to share with me how his family has struggled with homelessness and hunger ever since he was laid off from his construction job during the 2008 recession.…

My response to this scenario is based on my experience with volunteers at the Tyler Texas Corps. At this Corps, volunteers were used in various Corps programs and activities. The Corps relied on the help of these volunteers, however, for all their advantages and benefits there were many challenges and drawbacks. Managing the massive amount of volunteers required much responsibility more than the “Volunteer Coordinator” could handle alone. The challenges with volunteers is that the majority of volunteers are short term or seasonal volunteers.…
