Volunteering can help remind people that even as just one person, you have the ability to make a big difference. Brad Hewitt of the Business Wire described the appeal of volunteering as “at its best [it] enables people to selflessly give of themselves to others and to develop rewarding relationships and skills. Based on the number of Americans volunteering, it appears this is taking place". As a community Ralston could make a big difference to the environment of the island just by spending a day cleaning up the beaches and …show more content…
Hewitt also found that 50% of Americans consider volunteering time is more important and valuable than donating. The idea that Ralston embodies this ideal would signal a great improvement in the quality of life through community ideas about what is truly important.
The people of Ralston donating their time for the benefit of the community as a whole is also an active vote for raising awareness and gaining attention for the preservation of the environment. As volunteers the citizens of Ralston become a united force despite the diverse backgrounds as they work towards a common goal. Volunteering shows a commitment and investment in the community which is certainly a sign of good quality of life.
Volunteering is not only important to help make a difference in the community, but helps to build social connections. The Points of Light publication on the social impact of volunteerism found that volunteering helps to build stronger community ties as well as improving safety. By building this cohesiveness in the community people will have a better understanding of the issues faced in the city and be able to address them as well which would lead to even greater improvements in the quality of life in

Being a member of the Appalachia Volunteers of Boston College has been one of my most defining experiences in the past 2 and a half years. The Appalachia Volunteers Program is a yearlong program than includes weekly Sunday night meetings based on the program’s mission “to love, learn, and serve” and culminates in a weeklong service trips to the Appalachian region and beyond. Through both the meetings and my experiences on these service trips I have gained new perspectives and learned more about myself than I had ever thought possible and I will be forever grateful for that. Love is all around. The Appalachia Volunteers Program introduced me to the concept of agape, and showed me this unconditional, selfless love first hand.…

For our civic engagement project for the Redefining Leadership class, my group, Stephanie, Hailee, Christina, and I, decided to volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House in New Haven, Connecticut on a Thursday. Before we got there, we did not know what to expect, but afterwards, we truly felt grateful that we helped out a great cause. The Ronald McDonald House is a charity house that keeps families close to their family members that are being treated at a nearby hospital. We spoke with someone who works at the House and she told us that eight families were there on that day. We were able to see some people and did what we could to help out.…

Volunteering is an essential part of this world. Every day, millions of people around the world struggle with many problems such as: poverty, hunger, homelessness, etc. Without people volunteering to help solve these issues, what would the world be like? Although there are many existing organizations that help with these issues, such as Salvation Army and Meals on Wheels, one that I have found an interest in is Habitat for Humanity. They are a non-profit volunteer association that works together to build reasonably priced homes for people all over the world.…

We spent a whole day at my school doing simple tasks such as garden cleaning, moving old furniture, covering graffiti, repainting old walls and stairwells. In the end, volunteering had a huge impact not only on me but also the community around me. It enabled me to connect with my community and make my school a better place. I realized that helping out with the simplest and smallest tasks can make a drastic difference in society. Like the average American, the United States Military and the Red Cross have a special bond, but to a service man or women, this bond is much more. Throughout the history of the International Red Cross Society and the American Red Cross, the need to help military members in a time of need has always been one of its major mission and vision statements. Although there are many ugly faces to war, the birth of the Red Cross came from the need to help those during these times or struggle and sacrifice. The American Red Cross helps members of the military, veterans and their families prepare for, cope with, and respond to, the challenges of military service (Military Families , n.d.). Like the members serving in the Armed Forces, the members…

I have done several things in order to contribute to my community through volunteerism. One of the biggest things that I was a part of was the Boy Scouts of America, which has a huge foundation on volunteerism. In my troop, I have earned the rank of Eagle Scout, which requires an extensive service project. What I did for my project, was restore an old monkey bar set, and a bleacher, along with building new teeter-tooters for Hasbrouck Park in Hydetown. My Scout troop also was involved in a number of other volunteer works.…

If only there would have been more people volunteering, then so much more people could have been helped. And if more people can be help, then the suffering on earth can be ease. The big problem is that everyone is so busy with their personal life that they forget about the importance of helping others. A positive aspect I saw was that those who were already volunteering were really dedicated and kind hearted. I believe they are making a big impact on every person they touched and made it a task to spread their kindness.…

An elderly woman who got to take part in a high school community service project states, “Many think that volunteering is all about what you give. But what catches you by surprise is how much you receive in return.” This demonstrates why many people do not feel that they should give back because they do not believe the benefits that they can get from it as well. Consequently, when creating that feeling of happiness and satisfaction in someone else’s life, it comes back to the person creating it. Volunteering to help someone get tutored, help the handicapped, involve themselves with a program like Meals on Wheels, certain environmental work, etc., not only does one gain from that, but one’s community has been helped because of them.…
