The Importance Of Volunteering At Grace Hospice

Decent Essays
I've always felt like I have more to offer to the world. In what way, I'm not exactly sure, but only that I am brimming with potential, just waiting to let it out. That is why I began volunteering at Grace Hospice. I never gave much thought to those who work so hard to make the lives of those of the brink of death as comfortable as can be. Until one day I realized that I have so much more to offer to the world. The day I walked in to the Hospice I realized that this was the place for me. I love going in every day and seeing the faces of the hard working staff around me as they walk swiftly by, always doing something to help. I go in as often as I can and do anything and everything they ask of me. From filing patient records to filling out

350 word limits Essay Question - Other than your Eagle Scout leadership service project, what service have you provided to your community during your high school years? During my high school years, I have primarily provided service through my participation in the Christiana Care VolunTeen program and through the various clubs that I lead. The Christiana Care VolunTeen program allows young adults to help serve at the hospital in various areas, often exposing teenagers to how a hospital operates. Specifically, I worked in the Outpatient Pharmacy, SurgiCenter, and Pathology/Histology Lab, assisting patients and doctors with their various needs and tasks.…

March 29, 2009 was the day when I first stepped in the Islands of Hawaii. While looking around the airport, there was one thing in my mind. “Is Hawaii really a paradise?” Throughout my stay here, I discovered the answer to this question. While going towards our gate number, I saw hula dancers dancing passionately, and giving happiness to passengers who see them.…

The ICU ward was filled with a sense of isolation and coldness. On my first day there, I met Manny, a 7-year old Hmong immigrant who was recovering from brain surgery. His mother sat beside him in tears at the sight of her son’s head wrapped in medical dressing and his mouth intubated. I stood quietly in the corner observing the physician on call, Dr. Gajula, attempting to explain post-operation difficulties the patient would endure. Medical jargon poured out of Dr. Gajula’s mouth only to be received by a confused and apprehensive mother.…

For five years, I went to the Boys and Girls Club during the summer, and once a week we would visit the retirement homes to play bingo and conversate with the elderly residents. Unlike many of the other kids, I was more fascinated with watching the interaction between the nurses and their patients rather than playing games. I watched as the nurses would walk over to patients, adjust their blankets, and pillows as they showed so much compassion. I remember that day so vividly watching the nurses care for others so generously as if it was first nature and I looked at them with the utmost respect. Since that day, I have aspired to be a nurse and to care for others because, at the end of the day, that could be me, or a loved one, you never know…

I inspire to be many things, mainly having a philosophy of serving others in the field of health care, I believe we should form a symbiotic relationship as professional health provider, making it our obligation to not only understand the symptom but the social effects and developing possible cure; supporting and strengthening our existing institution while providing a better quality of life. I acquire these values nearly three decades ago, where I had the opportunity to volunteer in my community at the local church on Staten Island. As you know the church can serve a community in many special and unique ways, from tutoring the youth, to transitioning young adults into first time parenthood, as well as, assisting the community with entitlement programs. One of the major anxieties and financial struggles in my community were families managing a loved one with multiple-infirmities. This is when I began to see the church as much more than a place…

I became involved with Hospice in June of 2011 after my swim coach Keith Furey came to the end of his 10-year battle with cancer and was home with Hospice care. I have founded, and am president of the Nyack High School chapter named “Teens for Hospice” that is a satellite group of “Youth for Hospice” of which I am also a member. I want to continue to bring awareness to my fellow student body and Teens of Rockland County, about how we can contribute, support and help this specialized team of people who give choice, dignity, courage, and hope to people and continue to educate them that every little bit of effort counts, to make a difference, and that they can be part of a even bigger picture. I want to establish a club that will remain in place after I graduate, to continue fundraising, and be there as a support group for kids in families who are dealing with a serious illness in our school and community. Most of all to let kids know what Hospice is really about, unless they have had first hand experience in their lives most are ignorant to what it is, the services it offers, the comfort it brings, and the fun ways to raise money for such a worthy cause, for example Dance a thon, Haunt for Hospice, Hugs for Hospice, Bounce for Hospice and many…

I want to become a physician-scientist because I want to work at the interface between basic science research, which has the power to elucidate new knowledge, and clinical medicine, which has the ability to translate scientific discoveries to a deliverable form that can directly help the patients in need. For three years, I studied the role of tumor microenvironment on breast cancer metastasis in Dr. Semenza’s laboratory at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. As I studied the role of Hypoxia-inducible factor on integrin expression and subsequent cell motility, I learnt that cancer is a multi-faceted disease that consists of a web of multiple biological mechanisms as well as other arenas of science. Though I have volunteered at two different hospitals over 2 years, only recently have I realized something I didn’t know about healthcare. To me, it seems that though doctors are undoubtedly a centerpiece when it comes to healthcare, it doesn’t look like they are actually part of the “patient care team”. Earlier in my life I had an angelic view of doctors, and I figured that they were the people who would spend the most amount of time bonding with patients. However, in the Riverside hospital I currently work at, what occurs is quite the opposite. Nurses and assistants are really the people that are with and care for the patients at all times, and doctors are rarely present.…

This summer I became a care assistant at a local care home. The driver behind me pursuing this was my desire to give back to the local community, a desire that Hogan Lovells demonstrates through your pro bono work. Doing this I was able to provide care and assistance to some of the most vulnerable people in our society. The majority of my work centered around providing personal care, assisting with day-to-day living and nursing needs of the residents. However, I found it important to go further than this, providing emotional support by taking the time to personally interact with the residents, providing well-needed company.…

I feel that I can make a difference in each patient’s life that I encounter, it might be as small as getting a wheelchair if they seem flaccid or weak, a blanket if they are cold, something to drink or just talking to a patient to get their mind off pre-surgery. I look forward to volunteering each week. The most rewarding day by far was being able to witness a nurse giving CPR to a child choking. She saved his life. I would want to someday be able to be able to save a life, not for the recognition but because I want to make a difference.…
