How Coyote Hills shaped who I am

I started volunteering at Coyote Hills Horse Rescue in the middle of October of 2014. I started because it would be a new experience and I love new experiences. Sara Mosle and Robert Coles are two individuals who become exposed to volunteerism because of specific circumstances yet they also encounter issues of extraordinary mismatch throughout their work. The term “mismatch,” has been applied to biological, psychological and social settings; regardless of the scenario, the outcomes of a mismatch can potentially do more harm than good. Many years ago, laying out on the trampoline late at night, I remember hearing the coyotes howl and yip in the field bordering my friend’s house. The sound so frightened us that we promptly rushed inside. To children that grew up never truly in the country, only on the edge of town, coyotes seemed so wild. However, as Dan Flores illuminates in his book, Coyote America: A Natural and Supernatural History, that encounter was not an unusual experience at all. In the past century coyotes have spread across all reaches of the United States.…

Unfortunately, the East Bay began to document villages starting only 5,000 years from today, therefore no one actually knows how many village sites stood on the park’s grounds. The park became open to the public in 1967 because it became more obvious to the public that certain regions such as Coyote Hills had to be preserved in order to be able to embrace its nature in its natural state. Most regional parks give communities a chance to come together and learn from the land’s history and wildlife, as well as teaches individuals to embrace the world around them without the distractions of modern day…

Freshman year I started volunteering at Suncoast hospice; mainly because of the fact that I needed to build up my pre-med resume with healthcare experience but also because it was the only local health care related volunteer activity and transportation was an issue. Little did I know that taking on a challenge that would have such an impacting effect on my character and how I interpret the world. Through various activities ranging from baking cookies, making hand sewn comfort bears, to delivering groceries, and folding over 500 “thinking about you cards”; I have come to the realization that the ripple effect does not have any limitations, no matter how big or small one’s actions.
