Having the proper balance of vitamin levels is essential to our overall health. There are beneficial due to their ability to aid in preventing and treating diseases such as, heart problems, high cholesterol, and eye and skin disorders. There 13 vitamins produced by humans are separated into either water soluble, or fat soluble. Water soluble vitamins such as B and C are easy to be absorbed in the body. Since they are so easily absorbed and the body is unable to store large amounts, these vitamins are removed from the body by the kidneys once they lose their purpose (fda.gov). Fat soluble vitamins such as A, D, E, and K use acids that absorb fat in order to be absorbed into the body. These vitamins are then used as needed (fda.gov). All of the vitamins attribute different qualities to provide us with good health. Two of the vitamins that I will focus on is Vitamin D and Vitamin K …show more content…
Rickets is a childhood disease of softening of weakening bones (mayoclinic). In 1914 As a plan to find the cure for Rickets, Dr Mellanby fed cod liver oil to dogs and discovered that the dogs did not develop Rickets and the ones that had Rickets were treated. Because of such results, it was concluded that Vitamin A was the cause of the disease prevention. Then in 1922 Dr. Elmer McCollum synthesized cod liver oil to where Vitamin A was removed. The oil still continued to cure the dogs and it was concluded that a different substance was the that cause of a cure for Rickets. That substance was later named Vitamin D
