Why Do Violent Role Playing Games Cause Violence?

Improved Essays
Violent role-playing games are a hotly disputed subject within the close-knit communities of parents, educators, and video game designers. Parents argue that they are degrading for their children and educators tend to lean towards the angle that their students do not benefit from the influence of games with violence in them, or ban elementary-school level children from pretending to fight during recess because of, they claim, safety reasons. However, these types of games are educational and beneficial for children, especially if in future life they plan to serve in the military or in any high-ranked government or business position (for the same reasons that businessmen often read Sun Tzu 's The Art of War). They can teach valuable life lessons, they provide an outlet for violent thoughts and feelings, are entertaining, and can stop people from committing real homicides.

While playing the game, kids have the time of their life enjoying all the graphic content the game provides. Although violent videogames do expose adolescents to graphic content, that does not mean the viewer will become violent themselves. Video Games Spread Violence Video games have said to be a cathartic exercise because they release unnecessary emotions in an uncontained manner. Some studies show that the benefits of violent video games with a “role-playing” aspect outweigh the drawbacks that the violence presents. For example, the game Neverwinter Nights contains a great deal of heavy reading material that is challenging to young readers (Adams, 2009). Playing this video game improves reading skills, which come into play in the classroom. Eventually, a player’s reading proficiency would be enhanced with prolonged exposure to the game. However, despite the fact that there are some video games such as Neverwinter Nights, most video games that are played by people do not challenge students; many recent games are not like Neverwinter Nights, which does not create enough evidence to make a comparison.…

Others say the games don't cause this behavior. Most games can be as violent as war, while others show depictions of hunting animals. Although it seems like playing violent games might have caused these violent acts to be committed, violent video games are played by many others, but yet they have never carried out such violent crimes. Video games don’t seem to be the cause of these happenings because, evidence can’t support the claim that violent games are the cause of crimes like shootings, many people around the world play these games but only a few have chosen to commit a violent crime, and video games like these are not the only factor to violent behavior.…

Ever since Mortal Kombat first came out in the mid-nineties, video game violence has become a lingering conversation; especially when a senseless act of violence occurs in the real world. There have been many studies out there to determine if there is a link between video game violence and if it is the cause of many real world tragedies. The American Psychological Association released a report in August of 2015, that stated there is a “link between playing violent video games and aggression” although it goes on to say that there is still not enough research to conclude whether it leads to criminal violence (“Technical Report”, 2015). Although they point out in the text that “aggression” does not necessarily mean “violence” (“Technical Report, 2015). This type of publication allows the media to make blanket statements about the connections and essentially place any blame upon the medium as opposed to the persons responsible for such heinous acts.…

If video games were the reason for violence and crimes, then these other countries that play the same amount of games should have a similar number of gun-related murders with America, but instead they fall short by thousands. This evidence alone shows that video games cannot be the cause of violent murderous tendencies on a national stage. Another strong piece of evidence, is trying to link the sale of video games and the increase of crime rates. The Bureau of Justice Statistics, which is a federal government agency that collects, analyzes and publishes data on crime at taxpayers expense, posted a graph on their website showing the crime rates between 1973 and 2003 (BJS). One section of the graph showed the time period between 1993-2003, which is when the so-called infamous game “Grand Theft Auto” made it’s debut.…
