There are several species on the earth and each species has its unique characteristics. Even within a species, there exists noticeable variation. Variety is the essence of nature. Confining this article to humans, it can be seen that all human beings are similar to a great extent but there are also different from each other to a significant extent. The variation among individuals is due the genetic make up. With an exception of monozygotic twins, no two individuals in the world are identical. This is due to the difference in their genetic constitution. A volume of 3ml of semen contains around 400, 000 sperms and the beauty is that, no two sperms are alike. Department of Energy and National Institute of Health coordinated on the project of human genome sequencing. It was called Human Genome Project (HGP). Welcome Trust (UK) was the major partner of this project. Some of the other countries which joined in this project were Germany, France Japan, China .
Human genome project was a huge project which required a lot of financial and intellectual inputs. Advanced equipment, cutting edge technology in genetic engineering, tools of bioinformatics and efforts of several intelligent scientists made this attempt a success. To get a rough estimation of the cost we can consider the cost of sequencing a single base pair, which is 3 dollars approximately. The human genome consists of 3 x 109 bases. There for the approximate cost sequencing the whole human genome would have been 9000,000,000 dollars.
The main objectives of human genome project were :-
1. To determine the number of all base pairs in human genome and to sequence them
2. To identify the functions of all genes present in human genome
3. To identify genes responsible for genetic disorders
4. To establish the susceptibility or resistance to various
