There is one central element that I have learned by participating in this social problems course that I found essential to understanding sociology. The common aspect that was presented in about every discussion board topic for this course as a possible solution was education. Without the proper understanding and education for each topic that was provided for us to analyze, I would not have been able to accurately evaluate the various social problems we encountered throughout the semester. This course helped broaden my concepts and ideas that I can use to now use to improve my sociological imagination and apply them to other social problems I might encounter in future courses. Though education is the essential element for understanding sociology, …show more content…
Though the opinions that others hold may not be the same as mine, it is still crucial to openly listen to the points others find value in. This was another aspect that I also learned through taking this course. Having the discussion boards for almost every chapter of the book was an element of this course that I thoroughly enjoyed. Through this I was able to obtain knowledgeable feedback that people gave me to challenge or expand on what my opinion was. It was always intriguing to see how others were able to take my opinion and apply it to their own. This fact was also reciprocated when I would respond to my fellow classmates. Listening to other’s opinions gave me the ability to expand the conversation further by asking other questions that were related to the topic. Reading the discussion posts from my fellow classmates also made me question the validity of my own opinion because they would draw conclusions for elements that I had not gathered before. My favorite moment from participating in these discussion boards was after reading a post about the last topic we discussed in regards to the relation of technology, the environment, and armed conflict. My understanding of the last discussion topic was strengthened after someone described the relation between the three elements like a catalyst. This was a great word to describe the relationship, which enabled me to further my own sociological imagination on the issue. Another element that I learned through this course that helped me analyze my ideas about a social problem were the various social theories that were found at the end of each chapter. These theories were beneficial in most discussions because the showed the various pro and cons that could be taken from the social problem. Applying the thoughts of other people along with social theories that have been developed by famous

I personally have noticed many changes throughout this course. I mostly noticed how now I analyze my jobs more with my coworkers, bosses and myself. I have one job that I absolutely love and another one that I do not care for very much, I did not really understand why because I get along well with my coworkers and higher ups. As our course went on and I started to understand business some more I then realized why there were certain things that were shaping my views about my jobs. One big thing that I noticed was the team work at my jobs. The job that I enjoy more has great team work, everyone knows their specific job and everyone does it well. We all do our jobs while helping each other when needed without having to be asked. Every one communicates…

It touches on so many different categories such as: social class and inequality, race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, culture and socialization, deviance and criminality, and global dynamics. The sociological imagination will vary from each individual as he or she has their own personal experiences throughout their life course even if two people are living what seems like the same exact lifestyle. I think this ability to relate personal troubles to social issues is a complex skill and is not fully developed until later on in life and with that being said I do not think everyone reaches the capacity in their minds to develop this skill unless they are open-minded. As stated before I think this particular skill is a real eye-opener for those who do reach the level to obtain it. Before taking this class I did not view my own personal troubles the way I do now. By this I mean I automatically stop for a moment and think about how I can relate it to a social issue and take it from…

Coming into this course, I really didn 't know what to expect. Sociology is something that I’ve always known about, but never really paid much attention to. As many people other people think, I saw sociology and psychology as the same thing. I didn 't take the time to read or understand what the difference was and even if there really was a difference. I quickly learned that there was. Sociology is “the scientific study of society and human behavior” (Henslin, 2011). The weekly reading taught me something new each and every time. I’ve never been a big fan of reading textbooks, but I found the book for this course to be very interesting. The topics and reading that were assigned were things people could relate to and topics that are constantly being talked about in society. With each of the weekly readings came a weekly paper. The papers weren 't too bad to write. I can actually say that I enjoyed writing a few of them because the topic was something that would interest me on any given day. There were three topics that stood out to me: race/ethnicity, deviance and norm, and social class.…

When I delivered the teaching session, the experience was an overall success with students showing a clear interest and engaging in the lesson (Table 1, question 10, mean 4.3). The teaching began with a clear introduction to the key learning points for the whole session (Table 1, question 5, mean 4.3), which allowed the students to understand what the session was going to entail. This was beneficial to those who needed to see the big picture to see how topics fit together[1]. I further explained that the session will be split into three sections and explained that certain learning outcomes will be covered in each section. Student feedback stated that there was “enthusiastic teaching in appropriate sized teaching bites.” I felt that breaking…

The time I spent with my student during our tutoring sessions gave me a first-hand experience of how it is like on a student to teacher level. I learned a lot from my student, Kade, as I hope he also learned from me. During this time, I was able to observe his strengths and his weakness. I had to be flexible to cater my lesson plan to my student, so he could build upon what he learned and advance through more challenging activities. Through careful assessment, I could then evaluate my student and make a lesson plan that would build on his skills. These assessments include student reading inventory, running records, and spelling inventory. Through my observations I could identify my student’s reading and writing skills and apply them to their activities.…

Throughout these last few weeks I have learned a lot in this class. What I have learned has made me think more about the world around me, broadening my mindset. I was very excited to take this course because my favorite course in high school was sociology. I knew I would like this course because I am interested in the material and it allows me to think outside of the box. I really like how it isn’t as cut and dry as other subjects may be; sociology allows you to have an open mind. By saying it is not cut and dry, I mean that it has so much more to it and someone may take something entirely different from it than I did. Sociology can be looked at in many different perspectives, as we learned through the perspectives of other sociologists. Three…
