Picture that person that comes to mind when thinking of someone who would be considered a friend. They might be described as kind, humorous, fun, enjoyable, etc., but a person cannot become a friend without building up a connection first, otherwise known as a friendship. A friendship is not just two people who get along well or have some involvement in the other’s life. A true friendship is a strong relationship involving complete trust, loyalty, and respect. We both play volleyball, we both enjoy singing, we both love the beach, we both have the same sense of humor, etc. These are all similar interests that can play a role in the formation of a friendship, but they are not what defines a true friendship. There come times when one of us need someone to vent to, and we are always each other’s go-to person. We depend on one another because we both trust that the other will be there for them and respect what they say by not being judgmental or condescending. There were tough times I went through in the past, and she stayed by my side through it all. I ended up choosing to quit volleyball, and even though she wanted me to continue playing and didn’t agree with my decision, she was understanding and accepted it because she knew my choice to quit was what I needed to do. She commits to my happiness and always knows when something is wrong, making it her goal to put a smile on my face and make me laugh. A friendship is a bond shared by two people who possess the qualities of trustworthiness, respect, and loyalty. These qualities are essentially the glue of friendship; they hold it together. Without them, a friendship cannot strive. Friendships are valuable and enhance one’s quality of life in more ways than many thinks. Friendships provide the opportunity to talk to someone, hang out with someone, laugh with someone, cry with someone, do crazy things with someone, and allows one to express freely who they are. Those authentic friends will celebrate the good times and get us through the tough times. In friendship, it is reassuring to know that someone believes in you, motivates you, and always wants what is best for you. Although it may not be evident, friendships have significant influences lives of other people and helps shape who we are.
