“The friend of my adversity I shall always cherish most. I can better trust those who helped to relieve the gloom of my dark hours than those who are so ready to enjoy with me the sunshine of my prosperity.” Around struggle, trial and adversity we find opportunities to make or break trust with those around us. The Army exists in struggle, trial, and conflict for society to remain apart. So then, how significant is trust to the Army Profession? In this paper, I will address how trust plays the most significant role in the Army Profession. Trust is the social adhesive that holds us together. It shapes our behavior consciously and subconsciously as we interact with others toward a mutual goal. When we apply this idea to a much larger scale, we can see that the Army model is built, layer upon layer, on trust. “Trust is essential for the successful accomplishment of every mission and endeavor.” Every mission at every level. The importance of trust between the Army and the public is of the utmost. A great example of trust dissolving was the Vietnam conflict. Public trust in the political decision making unraveled due to the drafting process, disconnection, and disagreement. Many Soldiers returning home were criticized and scorned for their involvement. It required the Army to make changes to realign with the will of the people we serve. It took nearly two decades to regain the American public’s trust again. On the contrary, after the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center, President Bush’s call for action was exactly what the American public wanted and expected us (Military) to do. According to the Gallup polls of September 22, 2001, his approval ratings were 90% which translates into a high degree of trust in the United States military as we carried out their
