Personal Narrative: The Spread Of Life

As I read through the readings we have heard this morning, particularly our gospel, two memories from my childhood came to my mind. On the surface they seem to have little to do with what we have read, but bear with me, I hope to make them make sense. The first memory was of my mother, or more particularly my mother’s habit of beginning to watch a movie when it was half way through. I’m not sure if you’ve had a similar experience as that, where people join into the storyline after most of the character development and plot construction has taken place – leaving them with no clue what is going on, but for some reason an insatiable need to make sense of it. “Is he the good guy?”, “Oh, why did they do that?”, “Well this makes no sense at all?”. These were the sounds of my childhood movie watching experience. The second memory was of a series of books I still do not completely understand and slightly wonder if witchcraft is involved, the series known as the Magic Eye books. Having been shaped by experiences and life to this point, the crowds hear the words 'bread of life ' and jump straight to a very physical understanding of Jesus ' words. They remember the hard work it is to simply have basic sustenance on the table and think back to the working of this Jesus who managed to feed five thousand with five loaves and two fish. They see a very miraculous gift horse. They also see a means of achieving the ends they desire, which for the generally poor occupants of the Galilean region was understandably little more than bread on the table, and water in their cup. The vision they had of the good life, of what it meant to live fully, was one in which hunger and thirst no longer dominated their

After watching some gameplay videos for the new ps4 game Until Dawn, I was reminded of a strange term I had once heard, the butterfly effect. Upon seeing this, I decided to do some research to find out more about it. The Chaos theory more commonly called the butterfly effect summarized by Edward Lorenz is a branch of mathematics that deals with complex systems whose behaviour is highly sensitive to slight changes in conditions, so that small alterations can give rise to strikingly great consequences. With this, I thought a many life decisions that I had made, both large and small and thought of how they affected my life and how different my life would be if I had chosen to take another path. I am a Christian and with further thought, came to…

Through my four years in high school, one of the toughest classes I faced was AP biology. The rigorous course involved an intense 48 chapter lesson plan with a 2 hour AP exam at the end of the school year. Near the end of my junior, I was skeptical of taking this class, as I heard from my fellow classmates that the class was difficult to earn a decent grade. With this in mind, I began preparing for the class over the summer by reading the textbook, and practicing using the workbook. As I read the book, I became deeply interested in this subject.…

Fantastic points in respect to the “The Rocking Horse Winner”. Adding to those, I also think the story presented the lesson that the thrust for success, such as, Paul’s mother feelings about her life, or the hunger to connect, like how Paul felt towards his mother, cannot be filled by things of this world. Regardless of the how many worldly or “lucky” wins you have, without surrendering to Christ, you will only thrust for more. Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst.”…

In today's society the average person goes through high school, then repeats the cycle through college, gets their degree and goes out into the “real world”. They meet someone, have a family and move out to the suburbs. That is the path that most americans take throughout their long journey in life. Contradictory to that some of the wealthiest people took the risk of taking their own path and profited very well from it. “Have the courage to follow your own heart and intuition” (Steve Jobs).…

My father has been in the military for 30 years. His career has taken him and my family, to every corner of the world. The Air Force is a demanding career path to choose; often the spouse is left with the full weight of the chores to be done on the home front. During the course of my upbringing these duties were, in part, delegated to my sisters and I. While we never experienced “a life of almost tropical idleness’ (CITATION) like the children of Jane Smiley, we became effective and efficient members of our house hold. We learned to respect our house and our family.…

Spreading the Gospel, One Sweatshirt at a Time All sorts of clichés and euphemisms exist that tell us every day how small and insignificant a single human being truly is in this incomprehensibly vast world. This knowledge has shaped the perception I’ve held from an impressionable child, until I experienced a chance encounter in the halls of my high school in Virginia. I come from a graduating class of 356 students I was one of only two Latter-day Saints in my entire high school, and now I am just another face in the crowd of countless LDS. However, a single event related directly to my faith has shown me the power that one individual can have in this world.…
