Reflection Paper About Bahamas

“Cast off on an unforgettable Bahamas cruise to discover a world of sand, surf and sun plus all the leisure, recreation and magic of the tropics.” Disney Cruise Line uses this piece of imagery to entice people to take one of their Bahamian Cruises. I have had the opportunity to travel to the Bahamas a few times on Disney cruises with my family. While I am grateful for the chance to travel, I was a bit hesitant to go on a cruise that traveled back to the Bahamas when my first few experiences there were anything but magnificent.
Walking off the gangway of the Disney Magic for the first time, I expected to be greeted by the magic of the tropics, just as in the advertisement. In reality, I got off the dock to natives bombarding us with samples of products we had no interest in, and did not want to buy. We wore flip flops in hopes of a tranquil day at the beach, but quickly realized our error when the ground appeared filthy with cigarettes, garbage and gum. The air reeked of sewage, the sun was not shining, the palm trees were not swaying, and the water was not clear blue like in the pictures. As we walked back to the ship after our uneventful day on the island, I was disappointed by

There are thousands of variables that could explain why I felt so strongly on both trips, but experienced two completely opposite feelings. My first trip to the Bahamas, as well as the remaining trips after that were with my parents. Being an only child, my most recent trip with Hannah was the first time I had a companion on the island. It was also the first time I snorkeled; that is, this new experience is likely to be another contributing factor on my positive impression of the Bahamas. While I cannot definitively narrow down the reason(s) behind my differing opinions of Nassau, I can speculate those two factors play a significant part in explaining my two very different

The cruise ship is depicted as a utopian beehive of endless comfort, entertainment, food—set adrift on the vast seas, away from the terrestrial world of responsibility. I have never been on a cruise, have never had the desire to do so, and, after reading Foster’s take on things, probably never will (over four years on an accident-prone submarine was enough sea time for a lifetime) . Wallace describes the Celebrity Cruises’ Nadir as a “floating wedding cake” (34) and goes into minute detail to describe the crew’s attention to service and cleanliness. Sometimes he seems to overdo it, like with his obsession with Petra’s “mysterious invisible room cleaning” services (46), but, in his overdoing it, you do get a good sense of the ship’s determination to please, along with a little insight into…

To most tourist and even many Florida natives the sunshine state has become nothing more than a Disney fueled tourist attraction situated with warm weather. While in many instances this description is an accurate depiction of the state it is worthwhile to note that this has not always been the case and before the 1971 opening of the magic kingdom, Florida was graced with numerous odd and intriguing roadside tourist attractions. North West Florida in particular was home to many of the states oddly unique tourist attractions which garnered local fame with tourist and visitors trying to get a glimpse of the Floridian culture. The miracle strip is a term, which refers to the region of Panama City and the other Florida coastal beach cities which…

Ipperwash Beach has been my home away from home for as long as I can remember. Some of my earliest memories include getting thrown off the inner tube into waves so big they could swallow me whole, campfires that my grandfather would build rain or shine, just so we could get that perfect bedtime treat and a sun burning so bright I thought the sweet summer would never end. As far as I was concerned, Ipperwash Beach was a magical place that couldn’t do any wrong. From a young age, I can remember the whispers and lingering stares I received when I would mention to a camp counsellor or adult family friend that it was almost time to go to the beach.…

When I was eight years old, my family went on a vacation to Disney World in Orlando, Florida. Being the extravagant woman that she is, my grandmother spared no expense; we stayed in a Disney hotel with a jungle theme and went to the water parks and restaurants. However, the prospect of going to Cinderella's Castle made me most euphoric. I had always loved Disney and had traveled to Disney World once before, but I was too young to truly remember the trip. The world around me was new and exciting, and Cinderella's Castle embodied all of the magic of Walt Disney World.…

This summer I went on a couple vacations with my family. One of the vacations I went on was to Key West in Florida, the most southern point in the country. In Key West, we went snorkeling, swam at a sandbar, and kayaked to the Dry Tortuga. It was breathtaking. The water was as blue and beautiful as a sparkling turquoise gemstone.…

While at first glance, David Foster Wallace’s “Shipping Out” describes the miserable tale of the author on a cruise ship for a week, however, it is actually a commentary on the underlying insidious nature of cruise ships and vacation services. During this period, the author is treated to a multitude of luxuries, including thorough cleaning services, high-class dining, and constant recreational activities provided by the cruise. However, the author grows increasingly unsettled as he realizes the extent the ship’s crew is willing to do in order to gain the validation and the satisfaction of their customers. Jennifer Volland’s essay “Stay: The Archetypical Space of the Hotel” is another work which describes the nature of similar vacation spots,…

Out of all the multifarious places I have traveled, the Bahamas was by far my favorite trip. I have yet figured out what made the trip so special it is among the beautiful sights I saw during my trip or the even beautiful souls I spent the trip with; my high school basketball team. We went to the Bahamas with one mission, to win the entire tournament; but we accomplished much more. We bonded with one another and experienced a once in a lifetime opportunity. The memories that I made during my trip will forever be in the back of my mind.…

I fall asleep looking up at the big dipper, but wake up to footsteps above my head. The first thing I catch a glimpse of when I open my eyes are the “stars” that are now merely shapes stuck to the ceiling. I may sleep on this mattress in the corner of a once workout room, but this isn’t the bed my mom and dad see me using. I had developed this image where I was this picture-perfect girl in a picture-perfect room with 3 rows of pillows that radiated pink flowers and happiness. You would think as though you could still smell the fresh grey paint on the walls of the place where my parents decided who they wanted me to be.…

Panama City Beach was one of the most beautiful place I have ever seen because it had this big beautiful beach I wish I could see again, but sadly I have only been there once. I really loved being there because I went with my family and had a really great time with them by swimming, walking around, looking at the amazing ocean, and spending time with family. Most of the time I went swimming on a boogie board (like a miniature surfboard but you lay on your belly rather than stand on it). We all walked around on the beach and pier, but we also walked on it at night to find some crab, we only found a little bit not many.…

As I gave my father and brothers a hug goodbye, not once did it cross my mind that it was a permanent farewell. Extremely excited about my summer vacation to Florida, all I could think about was the adventure we were all going to embark upon that is my mother, Paula, my step-father Florentino, and my older brothers Luis and Saul and I. Visiting Florida was truly a vacation to remember forever, going to Florida’s world-renowned theme parks and riding the thrilling roller coaster rides that made us scream loud enough for the whole park to hear us. Visiting Florida’s historical landmarks, enjoying the white sandy beaches, and dreading the blazing sun and the sticky heat of Florida’s summer days. The best time of my seven-year-old life, having…
