The Importance Of Transitional Objects

Transitional objects are a self-comforting strategy use to offset emotions, fear and anxiety. The transitional object, so named because it assist the child in making transition from the dependency and protection of infancy to the independence and uncertainty of the toddler period. Attachment to an object such as a teddy bear, special blanket, swatch of soft fabric, doll or favorite piece of clothing is common and begins in the latter part of the first year, usually around 8 or 9 months. Because these objects have been invested with certain meanings and comforting associations, the child forms an emotional tie to them (Winnicott, 1953, 1971, 1977).

When I would see my peers being picked up by their dads or just hearing anyone talk about their dad, I then started to ask my mother about my father. I literally remember the first time I asked my mom “ What is a dad”. I had no idea that there should or once was a father in my home to take part in who I became in life. From that point on my mom introduced me to the American flag and told me that this is how she remembered my father. Every night before bed she would read me a different story about the troops who fights for our freedom and how important they are to our country. Once I became familiar with the flag she then showed me pictures of my father dressed in similar clothes as the men in the books she read to me at bedtime. Soon after I found myself gaining an attachment too any item that was red, white, and blue and represented the American flag and men that dressed in some sort of uniform. Not knowing that I used the stories my mom told me as a security link to my fathers life that was ended in War. Whenever I felt down or unsure of my capabilities. I would want and need to see those three colors to remind myself of how strong I needed to be at that moment to conquer my fear or feel equal to others who had their fathers in their lives. Keep the environment well organized and free from clutter and debris, unsafe and broken materials, to minimize accidents. We should also practice safe evacuation and provide the children with a detail routine to escape emergency situations. Lastly practice and implement the use of universal precaution. It is very important for the children and staff to prevent the spread of diseases and germs as much as possible.
• Once you have establish a healthy routine with the children you service on a daily basis this will promote a sense of importance to the children and the routine will continue to be of importance and will become natural for the children. Creating a daily routine is effective if the routine is implemented on a day-to-day basis. Establishing an effective routine can be done through individualization and age appropriate activities on the daily lesson
