Descriptive Essay On Harrisville

Harrisville is a tiny town that is almost completely dependent on tourism. Harrisville has beautiful, sprawling beaches, a faultless state park, and an up-to-date harbor. However what it seems to be lacking is people. When the recession hit this small, tourist town, its profitable production nearly stopped. Now the harbor is barely utilized by local fishermen. A state park established in 1921, now struggles to fill just half of its 229 campsites. Along with the vast expanse of beaches, the harbor and state park used to bring in enough tourism for Harrisville to be a successful small village. However, businesses that had before been well established, can barely stay buoyant. The only thing that has kept Harrisville from completely collapsing is the amount of summer homes and the elderly population. With 59% of Harrisville’s population over 45 Harrisville is thankful for its retirees ("American FactFinder."). This large number is able to keep some kind of population and fixed business within the town. With the fading traffic light in my rear-view mirror, I continued along my drive. Alpena originally relied heavily on tourism. A huge attraction in Alpena is the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary. With the loss of a majority of tourism, parts of Alpena demonstrate the economic struggles it faces. To the south Alpena begins with a series of closed buildings and businesses. In the south, many of the residential homes are foreclosed or for sale. Closed factories can be found within the city as well. Fletcher Paper Mill once stood proudly along the Thunder Bay River, but now sits empty with broken windows and spray paint as a reminder of the difficult times. Alpena is not without its struggles but it has remained the most important center and the staple holding Northeastern Michigan’s economy

Andersonville also was known, as Camp Sumter is one of the national historic sites in Georgia that was constructed to act as a memorial to all the American prisoners captured during the civil war. According to the historical research, the building of the site began some months before the US civil war ended in the year 1864. The purpose of this structure was mainly to hold the prisoners who would be captured by the Confederate soldiers (Cangemi, Joseph, and Cash, 26). As the number of the prisoners in Richmond were continuously increasing, the federal officials realized that they needed to relocate the prisoners to a more secure place with better food provisions. Thus, they chose Andersonville in Georgia as their ideal site for the military prison construction Concerning the structure, the campsite was bounded by the chopped pine of logs that had different heights that varied from 15 feet to 17 feet.…

It was officially called Camp Sumter and was highly known for its horrible conditions and high death rate. In History.com’s article “Andersonville” it says, “In all, approximately 13,000 Union prisoners perished at Andersonville, and following the war its commander, Captain Henry Wirz (1823-65), was tried, convicted and executed for war crimes.” This camp was highly feared and the conditions in which the prisoners were held were definitely horrible to say the least. When we look around us we do not even think about it, we check both ways before crossing the street, we admire the sunset early in the morning, or we read a book. But, we never think about how we see things, how does what we see get translated into things that we can understand? It starts in the retina, where the receptor cells are. There are two types of receptor cells, rods and cones, both are only sensitive to visible light. I am writing to discuss some concerns I have about Lacombe and surrounding areas. Concerning Tourism and culture I do not think there is much of either. Lacombe’s best feature is probably the small coffee shops and most likely the most touristy spots. Of course, there is only a few of these and when someone says tourist hot spots you don’t really think of Lacombe or the surrounding areas of Lacombe. Lacombe, Red Deer, Edmonton etc. are more places to live rather than tour so we are not getting much income from that department, I think if we spruced up some of these areas we might earn some more money from tourists.…
