If we take a step back and look at the world around us, we can’t help but wonder how we got here. With a world consumed on progress and moving towards the future, it is incredibly important to look back to the past as well. History allows us to not just learn from past mistakes, but through its understanding, better understand the world around us today. There have been countless events in history that have subtly or greatly changed the world around us and the least we can do is take the time to try to understand their importance. Three events in history that had an enormous impact in shaping this world are the Renaissance, the invasion of Poland by Germany, and the Industrial Revolution. The fact that today we can sit in front of a computer screen, employed, and comfortable is all tied back to a movement that started somewhere in England in the 1760s. This so-called movement was the Industrial Revolution. Created in the aftermath of the Renaissance, it was first started to raise people 's standard of living in Europe and eventually America. In this time, manufacturing was often done in people 's homes, using handtools or basic machines. This movement marked a shift to special-purpose, powered machinery and factories that led to the mass production of goods. This revolution didn’t stop there however. This time brought us trains and railways that revolutionized transportation, the telegraph which completely changed the way we communicated, and many other inventions. It was not, however, just an explosion of the press, new technological inventions, and groundbreaking ideas based on logic and reason. It was also an entire movement to push mankind away from feudalism, which had been dictating the world’s progress for ages. These are only a few more of the profound effects that this revolution had on mankind: improved living and working conditions, urbanization, child labor laws, public health systems, improved working class family life, the changed role of women, the emerging middle class, and profound economic growth. For me, coming to fully understand these events, along with many others, has allowed me to change my world view for the better. I now have a greater appreciation and contextual viewpoint towards the life that I live in now. I also am now able to look at the events happening currently and am better able to understand the implications that they will have on my future. The Renaissance should be taught in history courses because it teaches students the background and context for many areas such as art, mathematics, and science. The German invasion of Poland should be taught because not only does it explain the complex intricacies of global politics at that time, but it gives students a wider understanding of how a single decision can spread rapidly and affect countless others. The industrial revolution should be taught because it thoroughly explains the foundations of what we can see today in terms of transportation, communication, health care, and in countless other areas.All of these events have been etched into course of history and we can still see the effects of them today.
