I had no idea where to place my focus, and create a positive change in my community. Therefore, I began brainstorming for ideas. I had various ideas and solutions to those ideas, but no actual direction. However, one thing was certain, I wanted to work with children in foster care. I took into account past volunteer experiences, but I was still unresolved. It was not until another student approached me with an idea, to help the youth at the local Youth Crisis Center. I wanted to create a “bright spot”, and show the children at the Center that they were an important part of the community, and people do care about them. I then requested information about how much it actually cost per day to run YCC, the owner responded with an approximated cost of $150.00 per month, in relation to per child/per day. I also researched the Youth Crisis Center’s web page to get information, and statistics revealed that 95% of children placed in YCC, excel in the classroom, and the Youth Crisis Center is number one in state compliance. Also, YCC staff is above average in training compliance. I had people approach me and inform me of why they did not donate, and many of the discussions were negatives. I focused on the positive aspects, and reverted the focus to the benefits of the project. I felt stress from all angles of the situation. However, I did feel a sense of empowerment. I was extremely impressed with how passionate I could be when it came to defending my reasoning behind my project. I wanted to keep a positive reflection on the event page, and not cause conflict. During my project I heard many negative things, in reference to the owner, and staff who may not have integrity. I chose not to listen to the negative comments, and voiced very frequently that my project was not for the agency, but the children, and regardless of what they may have thought, or heard that should be their
