Instead of being than our partners, neighbors and collaborators they are seen on a lower level than the rest of us, as if we are looking down on them. Giving has become something that people just do, but why do we do it? In the “Toxic Charity” reading, it is said that almost 90 percent of American adults are involved personally or financially with some sort of charity. But why? I think, similar to the “healthy living” trend that is lush in today’s world, it’s become “fashionable” to volunteer and help those in need. I think social media has a little something to do with that as well, especially with people my age. I can think of many viral videos floating around Twitter and Instagram of a people giving away meals to homeless people, and having their phones out documenting the experience. “Did you do this just to show the world that you did this in attempts to get likes and shares via social media?” It’s that’s part of the charity process that is obvious but I believe is overlooked. I think the way we give, and why we give, needs to be revaluated a little
