The Importance Of The Toxic Charity

"Be Kind; Everyone You Meet is Fighting a Hard Battle." It’s a saying we all have known and heard and as cliché as it may be, it’s something I think we all should be doing. Something that has seemingly become less of a thing now a day. Being kind, loving your fellow man, with so much death and murder in the world, it’s easy to look at the world we live in now as hopeless. We always have a tendency of letting the bad outweigh the good. News telecasts usually open with the bad news and end with good stories. Whenever a celebrity is having a "meltdown" its front-page news and all over the magazine stands. We put so much emphasis on the bad things that happen we tend to forget that there are so many good things happening in this world we live in. …show more content…
Instead of being than our partners, neighbors and collaborators they are seen on a lower level than the rest of us, as if we are looking down on them. Giving has become something that people just do, but why do we do it? In the “Toxic Charity” reading, it is said that almost 90 percent of American adults are involved personally or financially with some sort of charity. But why? I think, similar to the “healthy living” trend that is lush in today’s world, it’s become “fashionable” to volunteer and help those in need. I think social media has a little something to do with that as well, especially with people my age. I can think of many viral videos floating around Twitter and Instagram of a people giving away meals to homeless people, and having their phones out documenting the experience. Or countless tweets and Facebook status posts of people boasting about their chartable …show more content…
“Did you do this just to show the world that you did this in attempts to get likes and shares via social media?” It’s that’s part of the charity process that is obvious but I believe is overlooked. I think the way we give, and why we give, needs to be revaluated a little

Robert D. Lupton, the founder of FCS Urban Ministries (Focused Community Ministries), writes this book to show a different perspective on the charity work people, churches, and organizations do. In Chapter 1, he presents the characteristics of something that he calls “the scandal.” Lupton is conscious that American are generous and want to contribute to charitable causes. However, he sees that much of the money people donate is either wasted or becomes harmful to the people that is supposed to help. Two of the reasons for this harming effect are that charity sometimes makes people dependent on receiving money or things for free.…

Most of the age bracket that participated in my survey were unaware that they had the ability to make a difference in the lives of others and contribute to a cause. They didn’t understand that, statistically, if 100 people contributed only 2 dollars to a cause, that cause will have gained 200 dollars. This supports my theory that a portion of the materialism displayed by the population is breed out of ignorance. In conclusion, this study proves that it is possible to influence society into displaying more philanthropic tendencies.…

Going back to my opinion, I still believe that it is good to help other people in need. They shouldn't be knows as some sort of evil ¨peasants¨ just for the fact that they are looking and needing for help. Most people don't even reach out for help, but people still go out to help them because it is just the right thing to do. I am also not saying that you should give money to every person you see and leave known for yourself. It is a great thing to be able to take care of yourself and strive for what you really…

On a blazing hot afternoon, I was with my Peer Ministry. It seemed like our whole group, interacting with the sizable population of homeless on the streets of Riverside, CA, was working like a fast food crew; we were distributing food from our cars at a superhuman pace. This activity seemed like any ordinary job our group did together — until I handed a brown paper bag to a homeless African American man. His expression registered shock. He put his hand on my shoulder and said, “Son, how did you know I needed help?”…

As we all go through life we will all undoubtedly be faced with circumstances that will make us gush with happiness, circumstances that will make us cry from the pits of our souls, and circumstances that will make us want to scream from the highest peak of the mountains. And during all these circumstances many people find themselves awash and looking for wisdom. Wisdom from individuals who have, for instance, already conquered life themselves. For me when I am in one of these situations I look for wisdom from one of my longtime heroes Dr. Martin Luther King jr.…

Chapter One: “... but people aren't meant to be overly bright in everything.” (15) I selected this quote because it states something I need to keep in mind sometimes. I get extremely frustrated if I do not pick up on something right away or not at all; like origami or some math concepts. At the end of the day, it does not matter if someone excels at everything they do; what matters is that someone tried their best at everything they did. Chapter Two: “There’s nothing like a song about lost love to remind you how everything precious can slip from the hinges where you've hung it so careful.”…

The Man in the Well and The Cask of Amontillado are both short stories with complex language, structure, and more. The Man in the Well is a story of young kids who encounter a man in a well asking for help; however the kids ultimately ignore him, leaving him to his helpless life in the well. The Cask of Amontillado is story of a jealous man seeking revenge on an unknowing friend, and the man leading this friend into a cask and trapping him there, leaving him to his demise. Although these stories are quite different, they actually share some similar ideas and claims that some readers may not be aware of. The authors’ use of theme and symbolism are but a few of the ways that make these two short stories interestingly similar.…

“Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption” is a captivating narration of the impact of empathy and the human spirit. Author Bryan Stevenson works tirelessly to help provide relief for death row inmates who were wrongly condemned, poorly defended, or left to die in America’s overgrowing prison system. He not only offered these people legal advice, but also showed his clients compassion and mercy, which many of them had not previously experienced. This is mostly evident in one specific passage in his story: “There is a strength, a power even, in understanding brokenness, because embracing our brokenness creates a need and desire for mercy, and perhaps a corresponding need to show mercy. When you experience mercy, you learn things that are…

However, there are people who can’t afford to help others, but they can help spread the word and help them get the help they need. Others might argue that even if you treat people they way you want be treated, some may not even say thank you for helping them and some might be rude about it. Yes, some might not be grateful about the way you treat them but, it's better to take the chance of not getting anything in return. At least you will be satisfied with what you have done for them.…

One of the activities I do that is substantial to me is volunteering as a Kettle Host during Winter for the Salvation Army. Through Christmas Kettles, I collect donations from the society to help give back to the less fortunate in our community. What volunteering for the Salvation Army has taught me is that even the smallest effort can make a tremendous impact. When I first started off as a volunteer, I did not feel motivated enough to believe what I was doing would truly have an impact. I had this mindset which led me to believe that the happenings in our community did not concern me, although, I began to have a change of opinion as I kept volunteering.…

An elderly woman who got to take part in a high school community service project states, “Many think that volunteering is all about what you give. But what catches you by surprise is how much you receive in return.” This demonstrates why many people do not feel that they should give back because they do not believe the benefits that they can get from it as well. Consequently, when creating that feeling of happiness and satisfaction in someone else’s life, it comes back to the person creating it. Volunteering to help someone get tutored, help the handicapped, involve themselves with a program like Meals on Wheels, certain environmental work, etc., not only does one gain from that, but one’s community has been helped because of them.…
