The Social Action Project Brooke and I decided to take on was to inform our peers about sexism and ask for their opinion on the matter. The goal of our project was for our peers to leave the conversation feeling more knowledgeable about sexism. Personally, I’ve been more interested in sexism because I consider myself to be part of the female gender; therefore, I am part of the subordinate group in our society. In the future, I plan to become a teacher. I thought leading a discussion would be a great first experience to something similar to being a teacher. We realized sexism can be a sensitive subject, and I realize how important it is to make sure everyone is comfortable during such discussion, similar to being in a classroom. Another point made were the sports the females participated in. Our participants have played volleyball, cheered, danced, and played softball. If they were born males, they most likely would have played sports such as football, basketball, or baseball. The next part of our discussion consisted of talking about why sexism exists and why men were unwilling to participate. We believe sexism exists because we are forced into gender roles and the social norms do not allow people to go outside those roles. Another idea that was pointed out was that at one point long ago, there might have been a real reason for gender roles when men were out fighting in wars. Women were forced back then to take care of the house and children; however, that is not relevant anymore. When we began discussing why men did not choose to participate, most of the females believed it was because they are immature, the males might believe the females will be aggressive and be attacked, and males are in denial that they are treated as superiors. All of these reasons could have been a possible explanation why males were unwilling to discuss sexism.     I found that though gender bias in predominately male fields of work still exists, the attitudes are much more subtle and non-confrontational.
