They didn’t just fight, but they did what would be considered mundane like building bridges, cleaning forests to make room for roads, and clearing dirt. They participated in military type exercises and that in turn gave them the discipline that they needed to be able to fight. The Roman Army didn’t always win, but the losses taught them what didn’t work, and then they tweaked them for the next battle. The Roman Army owed their success to both discipline and organization. The men in the Roman Army fought a lot of battles and many would consider them pros at fighting, but their lives were the full of repetitions. The Roman Army wanted to have more troops in each location so that it would up the chances of winning the battle. Not only the Roman military but other countries militaries wanted to expand their empire and the countries did that. Between 264 to 133 BCE, the Roman Army expanded into Sicily, Sardinia, Corsica, Spain, Macedonia, Greece, and a vast amount of lands in Northern Africa [5]. They would often send the bigger, better trained troops to fight the most important battles. The smaller troop members were often overlooked until the very end or sometimes they were the first ones to get killed. They would often be the first ones to enter a fight because they wanted to show the other members and the people of their country that they were fighters and that they could bring it.
