Joining a professional organization gives an individual the opportunity to network with others, attend conferences, and access to information about the changing field. Membership in a professional organization allows one to network, or meet people in which the relationship can be based solely on non-personal matters. Relationships can be formed in which discussions and learning about the profession are at the forefront. Networking may also allow for connections to others that can assist in new career opportunities. Professional organizations also grant individuals access to conferences and workshops, often at a discounted rate (Scholnik, 2013). Founded in Oregon in 1979 by a group of k-12 teachers, chartering members discussed and explored questions related to a student-centered, collaborative classroom fostered by computers and technology. They began connecting with educators across the world and its reach spans the globe. Its mission is to “empower learners to flourish in a connected world by cultivating a passionate professional learning community, linking educators and partners, leveraging knowledge and expertise, advocating for strategic policies, and continually improving learning and teaching” (International Society for Technology in Education, n.d., The ISTE Story). Irrespective of one’s role, the organization is centered on helping educators keep up with the changing educational landscape. If an individual is timid or uncertain about their technological abilities, ISTE creates a forum in which one can learn and experiment while learning from the finest in the field. For someone first joining the organization, the basic membership is worth exploring solely for the access to resources and the conference. As one becomes more comfortable with their abilities, possible presentations at conferences are also worth exploring. The networking alone is valuable for individuals who do not have access to or are reluctant to reach out to others as professional partners. Overall, the benefits of joining an organization such as ISTE to one professionally and personally far outweigh the small financial obligation. The opportunities provided can improve the practice of individual educators which can in turn enrich the entire education
