Society did not just appear out of nowhere, it was created by a set of individuals. With rules and regulations to keep structural order amongst the rest of the individuals. “ The man in the street still thinks in terms of a necessary antagonism between society and the individual. In large measure this is because in our civilization the regulative activities of society are singled out, and we tend to identify society with the restrictions the law imposes upon us.” (Benedict 252) These rules and regulations are there to control the masses of individuals, sure it is said that it is to keep social order and to maintain the individuals safe, but I don’t feel like that is the case. Society is now built off of greed and power, the more you have the stronger and powerful you are. It is as if it was a game of power, and these rules and regulations are the subtle way for those power hungry individuals to stay at the very top of the chain. First of all a culture was not magically started on its own, it had to be built up by none other than individuals. Individuals helped shape and define culture in the very beginning, that’s how culture was created. “ Conversely, no civilization has in it any element which in the last analysis is not the contribution of an individual. Where else could any trait come from except from the behaviour of a man or a woman or a child?” (Benedict 253) Individuals molded culture to benefit society, to be passed down from generation to generation. Culture has been passed down and has often been changed to be sufficient for the world today. I feel like ever since culture was created and set forth as a staple understanding of how individuals should live, is when culture starts to define and shape an individual. Culture has been a huge part of any individuals’ life, and is now what individuals use to define themselves in society. “ No individual can arrive even at the threshold of his potentialities without a culture in which he participates.” (Benedict 253) Individuals rely on their culture to live and move forward with their lives, and I think it is very important to live by what we believe, of course when it is not being
