The school that I decided to do my EL service paper on is San Juan Unified School District which served in Arden-Arcade, Carmichael, Orangevale, Citrus Heights, Fair Oaks, parts of Rancho Cordova, and parts of Sacramento. In their district they value diversity and it is a valuable asset that strengthens and enriches their community. EL students belong to their community and it is their mission to educate and inspire EL students to succeed. EL students are placed into their neighborhood schools. However, the EL student’s parents have the right to request open enrollment to their choice of school. One assessment that the district used is the Home Language Survey (HLS). This assessment is more a survey for the parent or legal guardian to complete. This information will help the school to provide appropriate instruction to the student. The district has more than one type of programs for the students and parents to choose from. The strategies that they are using is based on SDAIE strategies which was one of the strategies that we talked in class that can be used to teach EL. The district seems to care about their students and want to provide as much as help to their students. In addition, they want to build trusting relationships with the parents. Parents of EL get opportunities to be involve with their children’s education by working with the district staff. In addition, they get to evaluate the instructional services and provide recommendations to the district. The district wants parents to be involve, so the district made policies and procedures for the ELAC at school-site level and district level. After reading San Juan English Learner master plan, it seems that there is no suggestion for specific improvements. It looks like the district know what they are
