The Founding Fathers of the Constitution wanted to protect the rights of individuals by not giving the government a lot of power. When the United States only had the thirteen colonies British soldiers had the power to go into people’s homes and search them whenever they wanted to. In 1761 a young lawyer named James Otis spoke out against the searches and said, “One of the most essential branches of English liberty is the freedom of one’s house. A man’s house is his castle; and whilst he is quiet, he is as well guarded as a prince in his castle.” After James Otis said this the Fourth Amendment was written so the police, at the time British soldiers, didn’t a lot of power to do whatever they want.
