Personal Narrative: The Fiveman Football Team

I made it about halfway through the football season that year. Things were not going well for our freshman football team this season. We struggled to get through every game and the team held a record of one win and six losses. The season so far was very hard on me. The team had many let downs with very few close calls and even fewer highlights. Our football team had never been good. My team included the same group of guys since the six grade, most of them were still the same size in high school as when we started. Our small Catholic high school had about 50 students in our graduating class. Around 20 of those students were male, while only about five looked like they had any business lifting more than a piece of paper. This left our school with the recipe to create one of the worst high school football teams in history.

The team had about five players who actually could play the game. Three of these five players’ major talent was that they grew before everyone else our age and had a major size advantage over everyone we played. Out of the other two, one person could run the ball very well and the other loved hitting people so much that the coach put him in charge of the defense. With everything taken into consideration we were a five-man team. There were three big boys rotated between offensive and defensive line, the person who was given the ball on offense in hopes he would miraculously make it into the in zone, and then I was by myself in the back field on defense scrambling to catch everyone my teammates couldn 't properly tackle. This football squad was far from ideal but the five of us made the best of the team we were given and carried our team all the way through middle school. In our three years of middle school football we had won about half our games and we were hopeful we would be able to keep up next year in high

It was October 16, 2012. I was in seventh grade, just a boy to become someone or something. We were loading the bus with our two coaches, Coach Voss and Coach Larh. In sixth grade, I wanted nothing more than to make Lusher’s middle school flag football team. I had dreamed of being on the team from the very first day I heard about it; all of my friends were trying out with me; and we had grand plans for a year of non-contact, semi-athletic exertion ahead of us. Having been anxiously awaiting the lunch period when the team roster would be revealed, I was thusly dismayed, disappointed, and disheartened when my name was not one of the eighteen posted on the PE office door. My mother, in all her eternal wisdom, saw a way out of the pit of despair I had sunk into: Lusher was starting an Academic Games team, and she thought I might enjoy playing. I was more than somewhat hesitant; she was more than somewhat…
