There are many religions all across the world. Despite having many different customs and beliefs, there are also some similarities between them. Religion can play a huge part in people’s day to day lives. For some people it plays a bigger role than others. For instance, Muslims have to pray several times a day; whereas, Christians practice throughout the day. Although I am not a practicing Muslim, there are many things that they believe that still apply to my daily life. Muslims believe five rules, called the Five Pillars of Islam. Even though I do not practice believing in the Five Pillars, the overall concepts can still apply to my life. The first, and the most important, Pillar of Islam is the confession of faith. Muslims are expected to pray five times a day at: dawn, noon, mid-afternoon, sunset, and at night. Each time they pray they do not have to go to a mosque; rather, they just need to recite the Salat. The Salat does not take very long to recite and can be recited anywhere, as long as it is performed facing the direction of Mecca. In prayer, a person feels inner happiness, peace, and comfort, and that Allah is pleased with him or her. The faithful are meant to pray by bowing several times while standing and then kneel and touch the ground or prayer mat with their foreheads, as a symbol of their reverence and submission to Allah. The dedication to praising Allah five times a day is impressive. Christians also have daily spiritual practices. For Christians all though we are not required to pray five times a day, we are certainly able to. We are supposed to have daily prayer, whether it be in private or during a church service. Our prayers can be almost about anything. We can pray for forgiveness, for other people, and for guidance just to name a few things often prayed about. All are expected to refrain from eating or drinking during the daylight hours, with the exception of being sick, elderly, or pregnant. Fasting is done because it is seen as a method of spiritual self-purification. By cutting out eating and drinking, even for a short time, a fasting person gains true sympathy with those who go hungry, as well as growth in his or her spiritual life. I also have given up something for an extended period of time for a higher good. I have participated multiple times in Lent. Lent is the forty day before Easter where Christians focus on simple living, prayer, and fasting in order to grow closer to God. Fasting is not required by scripture unlike in Islam. Fasting is really done so we can we humbly deny something of the flesh to glorify God, enhance our spirit, and go deeper in our prayer life. For me when I have participated in Lent I have given up chocolate and soda. Both chocolate and soda are things I enjoy, but by giving them up for forty days, I was able to resist temptations to purify my
