Interpretation is a statement that goes beyond what the client had overtly said and gives new meaning, reason, or explanation for behaviors, thought, and feelings. My intention for using interpretation was to get the client to see the “real reason” behind the problem she had come in with. When I said this in the session my client reacted by responding “yes, but I never really could get it out of my head, that my mom couldn’t punish me anymore.” Afterwards when I told my client that this was the example I had written down, she responded “I agree the mom was the real reason why this person was so neat”. My intention was accomplished because I got my client to realize that her mom couldn’t punish her like that
