When reading paragraph six what stood out most was the emphasis on the sacrament of the Eucharist being the essential part of the Catholic faith. The Church is built upon the foundation of Christ’s sacrifice which is made eternal through the Eucharist. One has their faith because of their belief in the Eucharist, “Faith and the Sacraments are two complementary aspects of ecclesial life” (Sacramentum Caritatis Paragraph 6). The Eucharist enables one to grow in faith and it is because of faith that one believes in the Eucharist. Faith is essential for the sacrament of the Eucharist as it is the greatest of Catholic Mysteries, “[The] change of bread and wine into the body and blood of the Lord Jesus, a reality which surpasses all human understanding” …show more content…
The paragraph creates a logical connection by displaying that the Church stems from Christ and it is Christ who is the Eucharist. Just as Eve came from Adam, so too did the Church derive from Christ, “The Fathers of the Church often meditatie on the relationship between Eve’s coming forth form the side of Adam as he slept and the coming forth of the new Eve, the Church, from the open side of Christ sleeping in death” (Sacramentum Caritatis Paragraph 14). The Church is connected to the Eucharist because Christ is the Eucharist. This means that the Church can “make” the Eucharist because he gave himself on the Cross for us. This need for the Eucharist derives from the foundation upon which man’s purpose is built. This is, “Man is created for that true and eternal happiness which only God’s love can give” (Sacramentum Caritatis Paragraph 30). Our goal in life is to be like Christ and the best way to do with is through receiving the Eucharist. It is due to our fall that we are often led off God’s path, “But our wounded freedom would go astray were it not already able to experience something of that future fulfillment” (Sacramentum Caritatis Paragraph 30). The experience that is talked about in paragraph 30 is the Eucharist which is Christ, himself. It is because we can experience our goal and continue on the path to righteousness that the Eucharist plays a pivotal role in
