As a student in the Educational opportunity program, I have had great opportunities to understand the legacy José Luis Vargas has left behind for all incoming freshmen. Now the statement given to all new incoming college students that the single most important factor whether a freshman will succeed at California State University, Northridge is their ability to find mentors on campus by all understanding this means that we as new college students need the guidance of those that know what is expected to come across our path in an open environment such as CSUN. We may think that we know what is expected from us as adults, but most of the high schools that we come from do not provide us with the proper knowledge to even get through the first …show more content…
When I had questions that pertained to my academics, I immediately would contact (via email) my mentor Elizabeth Ramirez with questions on how I can enhance on my procrastination or when I felt that the group I was working with on an assignment did not put as much effort and time into the assignment like I probably had done. Elizabeth just suggested to me on constructing an agenda to go by it every day and being on top of my main priorities. This fall semester, I have a greater advantage to interact with my fellow colleagues and my academic mentor without any worry of not having enough to talk about. Even though I do not combine my personal life with my academics I know for a fact that I have a significant amount of students that have offered their time and knowledge to help me get through any hardships because they want us succeed. Now if the case were to be that I would stop speaking to my mentor then I would want EOP leaders to schedule a one-on-one meeting to see what is going on. If I were an EOP leader I would not want to leave students in doubt of their capabilities, or leave them to fall back on their classes due to any conflicts occurring at home and in their academics. Every student needs to be reminded that at the end of the day they have someone waiting to talk to them even if it is not for help, but they are there not because it is their job but because they were once in our shoes to start with and they know exactly how difficult it is to be in a situation that you have had to deal with on your

It would be the greatest honor to be a TRIO SSS transfer mentor for Wenatchee Valley College students. I am interested in being a transfer mentor because as a first-generation college student I understand that being a first-generation student of color comes with barriers, but also gives me a unique and valuable perspective with which to bring to higher education. My parents only have an elementary education and have no understanding of the U.S educational system and as the middle child of five siblings, I understand the responsibilities and pressures youth in these populations have with shouldering the burden to accessing and disseminating information to their entire family. Additionally, I understand the cultural challenges some students of color may face as many traditional households discourage pursuing…

Governor’s School Last summer, I attended governor's school west where three hundred and twenty-five bright and open-minded students from all across North Carolina gathered for five and a half weeks in a college campus setting. To me, this was a big milestone in life that changed me for the better. We left our cozy lives of families and friends to start with a clean slate with strangers we’ve never seen in our lives. At first, we thought of it as a sacrifice of our summer to glamorize our college application, but throughout the program we experienced things that exceeded beyond our expectations.…

One way Xavier lives up to its support for students is through the one-year long Smooth Transition mentoring program. I served as a smooth transition mentor to three incoming first-year students during the 2016-2017 academic year. In order to ensure that they have a successful first year at Xavier, I informed them about the resources Xavier University provides, including the writing center, mathematics lab, tutoring services, Ohio link, and much more. I also advised them to make good decisions and form relationships with people who would motivate them to succeed.…

Scholars have found that social and academic integration into an institution are of paramount importance to an individual student’s persistence at that institution. A variety of theoretical models, quantitative analyses, and qualitative investigations have focused on this phenomenon. A vast majority of these studies have utilized Tinto’s theory of college student departure. Tinto (1987) proposed that higher levels of integration into academic and social realms strengthened students’ learning and developed their commitment to staying enrolled. Strage (1999) noted that by the end of the 1980 's, researchers had reached consensus on the theroretical dimensions of retention for traditional college students.…

Questions are barriers to communication and may stall the construction of a positive relationship. On the other hand, reflections, paraphrases and summarizing are crucial and eminent when responding. An individual is more likely to respond and open up when you reflect their feeling rather than ask a question. In addition, they may not know how they are feeling however, if you have an idea, reflecting the feeling gives them the sense that you understand.…
