In William Shakespeare’s play Macbeth, set in the mid-eleventh century in Scotland and partly in England, the main character Macbeth is v a brave soldier who is loyal to the King. Macbeth is influenced by the witches’ prophecies and the strong ambition of Lady Macbeth. In Macbeth, the witches and Lady Macbeth influence Macbeth regarding his decisions, which ultimately are the leading cause of his downfall. The titles the witches greet Macbeth with spark his ambition to fulfill each new title they give to him. When Macbeth first encounters the witches’ he becomes spell bound, the meeting only helps determine his future. When Macbeth encounters the witches for the second time he is searching for them so they can answer questions of his. The first apparition appears to Macbeth as an armed head; this signifies Macduff. Macduff is the character that has questions the kingship of Macbeth since before his reign began. The first apparition says to Macbeth, “Macbeth! Macbeth! Macbeth! Beware Madcuff. Beware the Thane of Fife” (4.1. 72-73).The first apparition is warning Macbeth of Macduff. When the second apparition appears to Macbeth it appears as a bloody child; this signifies Macduff at birth. The second apparition tells Macbeth, “Be bloody, bold, and resolute: laugh to scorn/ The pow’r; for none of woman born/ Shall harm Macbeth” (4. 1. 79-81) The second apparition tells Macbeth that no one born naturally of woman can do harm to him. The third apparition appears to Macbeth as a child crowned, with a tree in his hand; this signifies Malcolm. Lady Macbeth questions Macbeths manhood when discussing with him why he should kill King Duncan. She says “ When you durst do it, than you were a man;/ And to be more than what you were, you would/ Be so much more the man” (1. 7. 49-51). She is telling Macbeth that if he were to kill Duncan he would be so much more of a man but if he does not he will be less of the man he already is. Not only does Lady Macbeth question his manhood but she also questions his love for her. She states, “ From this time/ Such I account thy love. Art thou afeard/ To be the same in thine own act and valor/ As thou art desire”(1.7. 38-41). Once she is down questioning Macbeth he begins to explain to Macbeth the plan for the murder. She explains that when Duncan goes to sleep she will drug the guards of his room and Macbeth will enter and stab the King. When Macbeth is done with the murder he will place the weapon by the guards to make it look like they are responsible. Not only does Lady Macbeth plan out the murder but she also assists. With Lady Macbeth approaching Macbeth in such a harsh way at first about the murder turns Macbeth against wanting to be apart of it but her ambition makes him decide
