It lets the people be apart of their government. To have a say in what happens around them. This right is was not shown a whole lot around the world in the beginning and is still not everywhere today. Back in 1989 a group of Chinese university students and other protestors settled in the Tiananmen Square in Beijing. They were protesting the right to fix their corrupt government and to switch to a democracy. In response to the protest the Chinese government ended the protest and killed up to 3,000 people as written in Document C. A government can become corrupt so easily and affect the lives of everyone in the country. This is why the consent of the governed is a crucial right. It keeps the government from having too much power. In “The Consent of the Governed: Essential Principles” it states, “ The United States of America was the first modern state formed around the principle of consent of the governed. To have the right to change the government at anytime also helps build a good link between government and citizens. The right to change or abolish the government helps make sure the rights that we have stay there. It makes sure the government upholds the rights of the people. It gives people some control in how the country they live in works. This right helps the country stay away from a tyranny. In 2003 there was a photo posted on a blog from an activist in the Vermont secession movement. The photo showed the American flag upside-down with the right to alter or abolish the government written on it. Vermont did this because they “were angry about the bigness of the federal government” as said in Document D. This right is vital to the people because they are the ones feeling the affects of the government. In Document D it lists another time were this right was used. It was the, “Declaration of Tea Party Independence” and it was a group of people who supported a smaller government, lower taxes, and the reduction of national debt.
