The Catalan independence movement is a political movement that emerged from Catalan nationalism that is mainly dedicated to the support of the independence of Catalonia from Spain and France. This feeling is brought by the dictatorial times of Franco who attempted to suppress the Catalan identity. To give a more geographical sense of Catalonia, it is a roughly triangular region in Spain's far northeast corner, which is separated by the Pyrenean mountains from southern France to which they share close historical ties. Furthermore, there has been a change in Catalan nationalism because of the disappointment of Spain and their ignorance of their attempt to be independent. The Catalans are tired of justifying Catalonia’s national status and language, therefore, have abandoned all hope that the rest of Spain will listen and understand their concerns within a multinational Spanish state from a political, cultural and economic perspective(CNN). In addition, Catalan nationalism has been seeking agreements with the Spanish nationalists for about 15 years now, in the attempt to stabilize a place for the Catalan nation within the Spanish state. However, this doesn’t change the fact that independence supporters still exist but they are mostly a minority group within the Catalonian society. According to the last election on October 2013, conducted by the Catalan Statistics Institute, 57% of Catalan citizens would vote for the independence in a hypothetical referendum. The Spanish Civil War in 1936-1939 is a historically complex event interwoven in both internal and foreign agendas. This was manifest in the involvement of various factions from militia, unions, and parties of different standings and ambitions. Not less important was the overt interest of other countries in the Spanish national affairs, such as the direct intervention of Germany and Italy or the non-intervention stance of Britain and France; an aspect which would ultimately decide the outcome of the civil war itself. The war is predominantly recorded as a fight between the Right-winged Nationalists and the Left-winged Republicans, the Conservatives versus the Liberals, and to many, Spanish Civil War had been seen ultimately as a warfare waged…

In UCR, 36% of the student population in a campus of 31,000 is Latino, Navarro recalls that in many summits and events that he has organized only a handful of students and a small amount of Latino faculty turnout to support. Navarro feels that many UCR students lack an interest in civil rights in contrast with counterparts from his generation. This significant cultural mental shift to the individual from the collective with newer generations is also reflected on the lack of interest from students to participate in supporting the Ethnic Studies department on campus, which the Chicano movement fought to implement. Our communities are short of much needed leaders. Dr. Navarro firmly believes that we need to re-equip ourselves with a new movement…

The war was between the Republicans, who were also known as the leftist and the nationalists (also known as right-wing). The right-wing were led by the army and had the support of the Catholic Church, counterrevolutionaries (monarchists) and landowners. The most important issues that led to the Spanish Civil War happened in 1930, when Spain lost all of its empire and was left behind the rest of Europe, industrially. This led to a division between town, countryside, wealthy, landowners, and peasant as depicted in Requiem for a Spanish Peasant by the figure of Paco, the rich people, the king’s army, and the priest. Cities in Spain wanted to have their own governments, and independence from Spain.…

The reality of communism would show actual flaws, that would not keep up the system ideals. What is communism?…

Document 1 is an extract from What is a Nation? by Ernest Renan, a French scholar known for his political theories on national identity. The document gives different aspects of what he claims forms a nation. It is written in 1882, in the period that the idea of nationalism was emerging with the 'rise of intra-European movements'.1 This could be argued to be partly the consequence of the resurgence of imperialism, which could have increased national feeling. France itself was recovering of her losses of the Franco-Prussian war, both territorial as status wise.…
