Typically a grassland species, the Blue Racer inhabits fields and open dry land. They prefer to live in areas with little human habitation.
The Racer eats insects, frogs, other smaller snakes, small rodents, and birds. The predators of the Racer are larger birds, such as the hawk and owl, and mammals such as raccoons, foxes, and coyotes.
Racers are very active during daytime. If threatened they will inflict a bite, which is not poisonous, but very painful. The Racer is one the largest …show more content…
The younger Racer snakes are prey to larger animals and adult Racer snakes are prey to humans. Both, animals and humans are reason for the decline of the Racer snake.
The only other species that are affected by the loss of the Blue Racer, besides the humans, are the prey of the Blue Racers. The insects, frogs, other snakes, and small rodents and birds would be affected. Since there is one less predator for these animals, they will increase in population. These species are affected directly, but the producers such as the plants would be affected indirectly. With the growth of the prey, the producers would have more animals relying on them for energy, thus reducing the amount of producers on Pelee Island.
If the Blue Racer ever goes extinct, the ecosystem would still be sustainable. The reason for this is because there is another snake, named the Black Racer which can be substituted for the Blue Racer. This might also be a reason as to why the Blue Racer is declining. Since there is an easy substitute for the snake, humans are not that intent on creating a better recovery plan for the
