The Atomic Theory states that all matter is composed of discrete units called atoms. The Atomic Theory started in about 400 BCE with a scientist by the name of Democritus. Democritus proposed the idea of the existence of an ultimate particle. He called this particle atomos when he was describing it, because the particle was too small to cut. Next, we get to Leucippus. Leucippus was the man who founded atomism, which is a theoretical approach that states nature consists of two principles, which are atom and void. After Leucippus came Aristotle. Aristotle believed there were four elements. These elements were air, earth, fire, and water. The matter of the world is made from a few fundamental building blocks of nature. He thought that it didn’t matter how many times you wanted to cut a form of matter in half, because you would always get a smaller piece of that matter. The Atomic Theory is based on scientific evidence just like any other science-based theory. The Atomic Theory has five major components to it. The first component is that atoms cannot be created, destroyed, or subdivided. The second component is that all matter is composed of very small particles known as atoms. The third component is that all atoms of a given element are identical. Lastly, the fourth and fifth components of the Atomic Theory state that in chemical reactions atoms combine with or separate from other atoms, and atoms combine with each other in simple whole-number ratios to form combined atoms. Without the Atomic Theory we would not know the things we know today, like that for every time of matter there is an antimatter.
