ARTIFICIAL PANCREAS DEVICE SYSTEM
The artificial pancreas device system is a system of devices that closely imitates the glucose regulating function of a healthy pancreas. An artificial pancreas does not replace the actual pancreas. It only takes over one of the responsibilities of the pancreas, which is regulating blood glucose levels. This system observes blood glucose levels and alters the delivery of insulin to lower high blood glucose levels and reduce the occurrence of low blood glucose automatically.
The artificial pancreas system consists of three types of devices, namely continuous glucose monitor (CGM), blood glucose device (BGD) and insulin infusion pump. The CGM has a sensor which is placed under the patient’s skin to measure the

Health and nutrition, particularly my own, is something I have taken special interest in lately as I’ve come to realize I’m rapidly approaching the second half of my life and want it to be as good as, or even better than, the first half. If I were to be asked eight weeks ago if I was a healthy person, my answer would be a resounding, “Yes;” my regular physicals and blood work confirming my response. And while I still believe that to be true, what an eye opener the Diet Analysis project was, as far as understanding my actual nutritional intake in comparison to the Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) of nutrients recommended for optimal health and well-being. The following paragraphs not only detail the Diet Analysis PLUS program used for this project,…

These advancements include an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator, an intra articular arthroscopic shaver system, and an angioplasty balloon catheter. The implantable cardioverter-defibrillator is a small generator powered by a battery and it works by sending electrical impulses when it detects cardiac arrhythmias. The implantable cardioverter-defibrillator was made in 1969, but was not used until 1980 by Levi Watkins Jr., M.D. at the John Hopkins Hospital. The intra articular arthroscopic shaver system includes “a rotating burr housed within a rigid insertion tube.” The shaver system removes tissue and cartilage from patient’s joints and was an “essential development for minimally invasive orthopedic surgery.”…

There are so many aspects to the healthcare field that affect the “Iron Triangle”. It is up to us as healthcare manager to know healthcare in and out so we can implement and decide what direction we need to direct our staff everyday.. We need to understand the impact modern medicine has, why healthcare cost is rising, what major issues we are facing, understanding Medicaid and Medicare and the current state of national health policy. If we were to change one thing it would have to be that there would be a cap on how things are charged so that people were not overcharged for something just because the doctor can. This would help the health care system so much in having a budget to plan for national epidemics.…

For my 3-day dietary analysis, I used an app on my iPhone called “Calorie King.” This app allows you to record daily food and water intake and amount of exercise. In analyzing the diet that I have from day to day, I learned that I do not have an adequate carbohydrate or calorie intake from my food. I believe these inadequacies in my calorie and carb intake is due to the fact that I have been on a low carb and high protein diet for a few months and I have fallen in to the habit of eating mainly animal protein and vegetables. While this has worked in helping me to lose weight, it seems that it does not provide the amount of nutrients, carbohydrates specifically, to meet the recommended daily amount.…

In the United States, 80 people are diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes every day (“About Us”). The disease is the result of the autoimmune destruction of insulin-producing cells in the pancreas(“Gene Therapy for…”). The pancreas can no longer produce insulin to respond to glucose; this means the glucose can no longer be used for energy, and the person experiences irregular glucose levels (Schneider). There is no cure. Insulin injections are the only effective treatment, and they must be given multiple times per day.…

My article is about diabetic insulin patches and how they affect people with diabetes. Diabetes is a disease caused by the pancreas not producing insulin which aids the body in sugar digestion. Currently insulin pumps are being used. “Insulin pumps are cell-phone-size devices that deliver preprogrammed and user-adjusted doses of insulin (Chait).”The pumps have to be manually set to inject the insulin using carbohydrate counting; however, they also alert the diabetic to low sugar and high sugar or mechanical malfunctions. Insulin pumps aide in controlling blood sugar levels and keeps a patient from having to have multiple needle injections a day.…

Blood sugar regulation is the process by which the levels of blood sugar, primarily glucose, are maintained by the body within a narrow range. This phenomenon of tight regulation is commonly referred to as glucose homeostasis. Insulin and glucagon are the most well-known of the hormones involved. Blood sugar levels are regulated by negative feedback in order to keep the body in homeostasis. The levels of glucose in the blood are monitored by many tissues, but the cells in the pancreas's Islets of Langerhans are among the best understood and important.…
