This was an historic date in history, because it marked the revival of the most elite culmination of athleticism the world knows. Nowadays, most athletes can only dream of having the honor of playing in the games. Although they drew inspiration from the ancient olympics, upholding traditions like the torch lighting and operating on four year intervals, the modern games didn 't include any affiliations with the Greek Gods. Athletes from all over the world gathered to compete, and for the first time, women were allowed to partake. Frenchman Baron Pierre de Coubertin is greatly accredited for his influence in the revival of the games. As an advocate for higher education, he believed that the best way to develop the youth mind was to develop their bodies. He believed that learning and athletics should be developed simultaneously. After paying a visit to the mecca of ancient athletics, Olympia itself, he figured that his philosophy would gain popularity with the resurrection of the Olympic games. The world was becoming more modern then ever, but it lacked a sense of friendly international competition, a way to display nations’ dominance and excellence without fighting a war.
