The country continues to guarantee the inalienable rights of life and liberty, but again America has defaulted. I think a good example of this is the Hurricane Katrina in August 29, 2005. Many people died, because no one saved them. They were condemned to death. Later, Claudia Rankine wrote in her book that “it was the classic binary between the rich and the poor, between the haves and the have-nots, between the whites and the blacks”. You are in despair and do not know what to do. However, when you see that someone has bigger problems than you, you get better. Many white people, as you are in this situations, look for the person, who has worse problems. For many years, “the black man has functioned in the white man’s world as a fixed star, “said Baldwin (294). No matter how terrible their lives can be, there is always one pleasure that they are not black. They believe that even if they at the lower rungs of society, there is always someone just below them. This idea helped these people to not give up and live further. Regarding to African American people, they also learned how survive in such situations and interactions. These people realized that they can be destroyed only if they really believe what others says about them. Nevertheless, the main thing that helped them to survive is their love. In his letter to the nephew, Baldwin’s emphasized that, “if we had not loved each other none of us would have survived” (291). They gave to much love to strengthen each other. Therefore, when they faced with the hardships, the imprisonments and other innumerable sufferings, they survived. I think it is impressively how love inspired those people to not give
